Re: Members Unable to Post to Group

Those are responses from their service when a message was sent to them from groups.io.? Maybe they could forward the bounce notice they got to see what the error was.

Re: coping with high traffic

I have noticed that groups evolve. The first year or two is the hardest, especially when a number of participants have not experienced participation an effective email group. When a group starts, unless a core of members are old hands, the group doesn't know how to conduct itself, what leads to a good experience, what is not so good. And groups vary. Styles that work great in one group can be terrible in others. Sometime brash, rough posts are fun, but often they are not. It depends on the group. Each group has to find their own style and members have to discover their roles. The process is often a pleasure and equally often a pain. Folks will drop out, flames may erupt, feelings maybe unintentionally or even intentionally be hurt. It's like the evolution of any group of friends or colleagues.

Here are a few suggestions that I have seen work:
  • As owner or moderator, you can set the tone. Post often in the way you would like to see others post.
  • Good examples work better in the long run than scolds.
  • If you see someone being inconsiderate or offensive, let them know off line, outside the forum. Keep the dirty linen in the laundry.
  • Realize that offenders may not know that they are offending and may be mortified to find out that they are. Give them a face-saving out, or a perfectly good member might leave.
  • If someone insists on trollish behavior after being told, cut them off for the good of the group. Give them slack, but don't let go of the rope.
  • I have mixed feelings about 'codes of conduct' and posted site rules. Sometimes they help, sometimes they can be stifling and put people off. I know I tend to like hairsplitting rules much more than most people and I have to edit myself.Consult your gut, then dial it back a little if you decide to post rules.

Just a few ideas, Marv

I sent an email to support last night, and I got a reply this morning that it should be working now. I tried my large dbase, and it does work correctly again. That is a very fast response by support!

Re: Pending Icon, But No Member is Pending

Will do, Shal.? I am betting it was probably my continual issue with my old Yahoo Group list members:? They were transferred using an older email, may have been on "No Mail", or whatever, didn't realize they were a list member, so they created a second ID with a newer email, and applied for membership to our groups.io group with that new ID. I'm betting that person ended up merging their two accounts prior to us being able to reject/accept this newer membership request.? The issue is slowly going away, as time passes, but will always be there for us, to some degree.

Virus Detection?

Sorry.. I haven't seen much discussion of this.. but does groups.io have any virus detection for attachments of files uploaded?

Thanks..

Re: Database access #bug

I received a message from Mark at 5:51am this morning (7/3) that the problem is fixed. I checked and it is working once again.
So nice to have such great support and response.

Finally setting up my new groups, and have a few questions

Hello everyone! I am finally getting around to switching my groups to io, and last night set up my first new io group to mirror the yahoo group. I must admit that even as an experienced yahoo group owner, the number of options was a little daunting. And, my trying to mirror the existing the group led to a couple of moments of consternation. With that in mind, I have a couple of questions that are probably very simple, but I? hope you will be patient with me!

1) I am looking for advice - or is there a place it is already collected? - regarding this setup process - what did you regret, what did you learn, what do you wish you had done differently, what pitfalls cropped up that were not expected?

2) There is an option to allow group members to download the entire group archive. Is that exactly as it seems, and if so, what are the pros/cons on allowing that?

3) It seems the only setting that cannot be changed after setup is making a private group public. Is that true? If so, that eases the anxiety a bit, since I can always rethink and change what I did.

Thanks so much for any insight into these items!

Patti

Members Unable to Post to Group

One member of my group said that her email to our group bounced, so I
checked her "Email Delivery History" and found this:

Most Recent Unsuccessful Attempt:
Message: [MyGroup] Subject Title
Attempted: Jun 27
Response: 452 4.1.1 Too much mail from this address E2210

I thought I'd check every member in the group (we have maybe 10
members) and found that two other members have the same message.

And a fourth member had this:

Most Recent Unsuccessful Attempt:
Message: [MyGroup] Subject Title
Attempted: Jul 2
Response: EOF

What needs to happen for them to be able to respond to group posts? Is
it something I can do myself?

I can¡¯t understand the inability to use a DELETE button? Complaining about someone messaging seems rather petty to me.

How about a reminder to the offenders to be considerate.? They may not realize the effect.?
?
It¡¯s like Amazon asking ¡°can you help this person and answer this question¡± and the idiots that answer ¡°I don¡¯t know".? Some must hear themselves talk.

Re: Database access #bug

I checked this morning and mine are acting weird, too.? As a temporary work around, it looks like you can hit the page number a second time to get to the page you want.? (The arrows can only be used this way for the first or second page.)? And the work around doesn't work when sorted on any column.? As a bit more info that you may want to pass on to support, the first click seems to sort on the first column.

I don't have any long databases so can't confirm the behavior. However, you might want to try changing the following to see if it helps.?Click on your name at upper right and select Account. Then click on Preferences at left and change the Items per Page value to something else.

Even if it does help, I'd still report the bug...but noting this setting will be useful information to help Mark troubleshoot the problem.

Re: Pending Icon, But No Member is Pending

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Patty,

That's pretty weird right there. I think it is worth posting that screenshot to [email protected].

Pending members can unsubscribe, effectively revoking their request for membership. I wonder if there's a bug involving that circumstance. Maybe take a look at your group's Activity log to see if there is any membership activity
that looks unusual. Perhaps you can spot an address that applied but was never approved or rejected.

Re: coping with high traffic

Deborah,

Some of my members want me to limit posts from each member to two a
day. Others love the list and want it to stay the way it is, friendly,
social and free-wheeling!
Neither side is necessarily wrong, it is a question of what type of group culture you want to have.

One way you could compromise would be to create a subgroup for socializing, while you try to keep the primary group more strictly on topic. Members who choose to join the subgroup can even have separate Subscription settings for it, Digest in one and Individual messages in the other, if they like.

Re: coping with high traffic

Deborah Armstrong

We have 36 members; four got disgusted with the level of traffic and left.
From June 19-30 we had 204 messages. We've had 112 in the last two days, July 1 and 2.
?
I have contributed to the traffic in order to poll the group for guidelines and to soothe the gripers. It's a writer's group so the idea is that we will be critiquing and commenting heavily on each other's work.

Yes, it's a special case, and yes, they can be deleted.? Just be aware that when you delete one, the message gets edited and the person that originally wrote it will be notified that you've done it.? Maybe if you do that for a few hundred of one person's posts, they'd get the idea (but I wouldn't bet on it!)? That message will have an Edited button at the upper right in the archives.

Be sure you're viewing Topics on the Messages page.? Click on the Subject of the thread (topic) you want to delete.? Click on Edit Topic.? There is a [Delete Topic] button on the "Edit Topic" page.
