Searching Files
Hello everyone, Wondering if anyone else is having this problem with searching their files. If you have a search that returns more than 50 hits at the bottom of the search page there are more pages in little page icons. In our group when I click on those icons it just kicks me back to the beginning of the files instead of to the next page in the search results.? Also had this problem of being kicked back to main home page when I clicked on a Wiki page from the Wiki "home" page and when I try to switch from thread to message view in the subgroups.? - LeeAnne? |
Re: Recently Posted Photos not working
J_Olivia Catlady
Oh, I remember this! "Recently posted photos" only refers to and includes photos that were emailed or posted as attachments, not photos that were "uploaded" into a photo album.? I think that's another semantic difference ("posted" vs. "uploaded") that falls on deaf ears as far as users are concerned.? I can't remember what Mark decided to do about this, if anything. It might be somewhere in the Trello ToDo list. J On Thu, Apr 7, 2016 at 8:48 AM, Daddy Dean <daddydean1@...> wrote:

Recently Posted Photos not working
Daddy Dean
Hi Forum, Any know to enable the Recently Posted Photos feature on the groups home page?? Some of my members have a hard time finding newly created photo albums and the Recently Posted Photos always shows nothing has been added when a new album is made or photos are added to an existing album. Thanks, Dean |
Re: Linking Advice?
LeeAnne,
We came to realize that if there are changes similar to the ones MarkI don't know of a good solution for this. One approach is to use a link shortening service that allows you to update the links. But that really just substitutes one dependency for another. And you'd need to make and update a link alias for each file. In this specific case it may be a good idea to ask Mark to support the "legacy" format of the address indefinitely, along with the "subdomain" form. I had thought that he did, but a few quick tests suggests that is only true for the subgroup's home page address. That would be a request to make in beta@, as GMF@ isn't officially monitored by Mark or anyone at groups.io. Shal |
Re: Creating TOC on Wiki
Nancy,
NEW: Table of Contents in Wiki, by adding [TOC:Title:MaxLevel] to aIf you're editing the Wiki page in HTML mode (a choice you made when creating the page) then there's a new toolbar button to insert that TOC marking for you. Insert it at the position on the page where you want the Table of Contents to be displayed. You can edit it (as just ordinary text) if later you want to change the title or the number of levels. I haven't tried it on a page in Markdown mode, and it may not be supported there, but if it is I'd imagine you can just type that text into the page. There's nothing at all it could do on a page in Plain Text mode. For an example have a look at GMF@'s wiki page "Why use a Subgroup" - that's a TOC with the levels set to 2. If you'd like to see what it looks like in edit mode go ahead and edit the page, then discard your (lack of) changes when you're done. -- Shal /g/GroupManagersForum |

I've added a link to "Why use a Subgroup" to the Wiki home page in GMF@ now. It's not perfect but I think it is good enough to be useful. /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Thanks Joseph and Duane for your help. As always, anyone with inspiration feel free to pitch in. Re: Subdomains
Nancy,
Have been following upgrade discussions on Beta over last two days. IThe basic idea is to give the main group and its subgroups a common addressing scheme, and perhaps one that's more intuitive than what went before. For example, my PTA group includes all members in the main group, and I have subgroups for the board, for teachers, and for active volunteers. This allows us to easily communicate with the appropriate people within the organization. So, in the new "subdomain" addressing scheme I have: [email protected] All members of our PTA unit [email protected] The board of our PTA unit [email protected] Teachers who are also members of our PTA unit [email protected] Active volunteers in our PTA unit I'll probably change "main" to "members", meaning PTA unit members, but I haven't decided on that completely. To me "main" doesn't convey very well who will receive messages sent to that address. For the subgroups anyway, you can see how "board at mhs-ptsa" reads very naturally, and likewise for the others. I just need to find a word that works as well for the main group. Shal |
Linking Advice?
Hello We are in the process of setting up a very large group that helps horse owners manage two different "diseases". ?This is being done prior to migrating from Yahoo. All of our 898 files and 156 folders have been loaded. ?(PHEW!) However, we have (according to Yahoo) 12,000+ members who are trying to access and learn a great deal of information from the files. ? Many of the documents have links that go back to Yahoo which of course will need to be changed. Additionally, in one of the subgroups, there will be 100s of ?photo albums and?1000+ Case History??folders containing many documents. ?Our (often computer challenged) members need to save and post the links in messages so the volunteers can use the uploaded information to answer questions about specific horses. ? We came to realize that if there are changes similar to the ones Mark recently made to the domain names, that links are somewhat unstable. ? I am wondering if there is a way we can better preserve links so that if the domain name changes again we don't have to go through this again?? Thanks in advance! ?This is so much better than Yahoo that I'm terrified I'll wake up and find it was just a fantasy. Mark, if you are reading this, thank you for Group.io.? -LeeAnne ECIR Group Archivist (fancy speak for file clerk)? |
Subdomains
Hi everyone
As background, we are in the process of setting up and migrating a group that has been with yahoo since 1999.? Currently 12,000 member? ( which will undoubtedly change with migration and real bouncing protocol) and over 225,000 archived messages. We have set up the parent/main group and three subgroups which were separate groups on yahoo. Thanks for any incite. Nancy |

Why use a Subgroup
Inspired by a recent conversation in beta@ I've created the bones of a new help page in our Wiki:
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Why-use-a-Subgroup My intent is to link it in the wiki home under "Best Practices for Group Management", but it isn't ready for prime time yet. I'm not going to have time to work on it much more today, so anyone with some inspiration is invited to put some flesh on those bones, or add some more bones. Shal |
Re: Search messages by author/sender
If the posts are signed, then you can search on that name. The references to Trello are to the item on the TODO list to allow search by poster directly.
A combination of the name and a specific item may help narrow it down. For example, searching this group for "Nancy meanwhile" (without quotes) should find your post (and does, along with another only having "meanwhile" in it). Unfortunately, it seems to act as an OR, not an AND, so that may not be the best way. The search seems to work better on longer words, especially if they're not too common. Duane |
Search messages by author/sender
Hi Everyone. In the group we are preparing to migrate, we have a lot of messages that we need to refer back to while answering questions, almost on a daily basis.? Wiki will come in handy in the long run but in the meanwhile I'm looking for a way to search archived messages by specific sender/author. In search here and on Beta, seeing only? reference to Trello. Thanks for any guidance. Nancy C |

Re: member of two of my groups using different email addresses, can only get into one group
J,
I think (a) there's currently no way to actually delete a Groups.ioI believe that is true also. For testing purposes it would sometimes be handy if you could. ... and (b) if she ever wants to regain control over her content,There's the maybe. It depends on the details of how a subscription works. In Y!Groups I tested this once and discovered that leaving a group and re-joining it would not recover control of content; it was as if the new subscription were treated as a new person. Some years later what I thought was the same test produced the opposite answer. I don't know if Yahoo changed the implementation or if there was a difference between my two tests which I didn't notice. Long ago, it was common for ISP's to re-issue the same email address once it had been abandoned (the account closed or the bill not paid). So joe@... might not be the same person today as it was months or years earlier. In that circumstance one would not want the content to be reclaimed simply by joining the group again with the old email address. Yahoo Mail (infamously) began re-issuing abandoned email addresses a few years back as well. (An aside: I hope that Trello suggestion gets implemented in a way thatI certainly agree. I can't imagine how it could be implemented without requiring a very explicit action on your part - such as adding and verifying a second email address while signed in with the first. It is that verification step that proves you're the same you. Shal |
