I sympathize, but that's your only option currently (and I think you mean set them to NuM). I had to go through it recently with a 3,000-member group I helped transfer over, the majority of whose members had not yet posted. I just did it a little at a time. I left the really ancient members alone with their M status, figuring that if they had not posted yet, they're unlikely to ever do so; and that if and when they do, the mods can just deal with it and unmoderate them by hand.
