This seems unlikely. When someone is approved for a subgroup they are automatically added to the main group. A person can, however, have a different Display Name in the subgroup vs the main group. You need to look for a matching email address, not rely on other data elements.

An issue I raised a while back is that someone can join a sub-group (by invitation or approval of sub-group moderator), and hence a main group, without any awareness by the main group moderatorship (through approval or main group activity log).

IIRC, the consensus was that this wasn't seen as a problem, as main and sub-group moderatorships should be the same.
