I can't remember what happens to the main group URL after you add and then remove subgroups.

However, to add to Malcolm's comment, you can also change a subgroup's visibility in the menu on the main group so only subgroup members see it. And delete all subgroup members but yourself. This doesn't mean that you can make a private subgroup visible or not to the general public. See
