here is my experience: I am the owner of a YG group on literary translation (hopefully about to relocate on Groups.io) and way back when YG had a chat section, we used it for online workshops and meetings that required a more direct, real time, exchange of views.
Through the chat section we run an interesting workshop on poetry translation for several months. (By the way, if you like poetry, you can read the outcome of that workshop here. There are several English poems: )
The chat feature was one of the things that persuaded me to choose Groups.io.
