People replying from their email program or webmail service will still be able
to reply to the old topic with its subject line the same. That means you'll
still likely see them replying to the old topic with the new subject (hence, a
mismatch).
You could moderate the old topic and manually edit each post with the new topic
that has the old subject line if it's important enough to justify your time.
