Glenn -- This is the part I don't get. Assuming you are an Owner of the main group, you should be able to do this.

Just Direct Add yourself to the subgroup, enter that subgroup, and change your Role record. Could you be logged in with the wrong email address?

If that doesn't work please send us a screenshot (or something) to demonstrate at which point the failure occurs.
