Re: changing owner email address? #owner

Reachingout,

And then later I want change my personal email address .. can I change
my personal email address on my groups.io group?
You can only change your email address in your Groups.io account, not in a single group or selected groups. Do that through the Email field on the Login page of your Account page.
/helpcenter/membersmanual/1/understanding-groups-io-accounts/setting-account-preferences-and-viewing-account-information
(see the item "Change your email address" in the section on changing account login elements).

If I do that, will my messages and my file uploads show my new email
address instead of the old one?
Yes, they will continue to be associated with that account, despite the change of the account's email address. Generally speaking though the web interface will show your account's Display Name, if you've set one, rather than your email address. Set your Display Name on the Identity page of your account.
(further down on that same help page, under "Customizing your Groups.io account profile and individual group profiles").

I read how to merge two accounts here:
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/16537

That wiki entry says to beware of doing that as an owner!
Merging accounts is a far different thing than changing the address of an account. Yes it is true that the ownership roles held by the address that no longer exists have been observed to disappear with that account. I think this is a bug, but it has resisted resolution.

What if did this:
...
5) Then merge the two email accounts as instructed in that wiki.
Would that work?
Yes.

But if your new address doesn't yet have an account (hasn't been used yet to join any Groups.io groups) then you should be able to simply change your existing account from the old address to the new, as above.

From your question I'm going to guess that you've already tried this and been warned about merging. This happens when the new email address has already been used within the Groups.io system (and an account was automatically created for it).

If the account associated with your new email address doesn't own any groups, and hasn't created valued content in any groups, then you may find it easier to delete the new account, and then change (not merge) you original account's email address to the new one.
