Apparently there's an issue with recent versions of TB,I first reported the problem a year ago, on 10/20/19, in the midst of the Great Migration from Yahoo! Groups. The topic thread, which somehow doesn't have my original post, is /g/GroupManagersForum/topic/problem_replying_in/35484913. The thread is littered with red herrings and wild goose chases. Pablo Sanchez submitted a Thunderbird bug report, but it was never acted on. See /g/GroupManagersForum/message/19756. The bottom line is that, in all versions of Thunderbird on Windows and Macintosh going back at least a year, attempting to use the Reply to Group and Reply to Sender footer links in either an individual message or in a digest fails. A new tab opens in Thunderbird labeled "Loading..." and nothing further happens. My diagnosis is that the mailto: link (which includes a Subject as well as the appropriate e-mail address) is not encoding the Subject properly. By hovering over the link, you can see that the Subject displays actual spaces (and other special characters) instead of using the proper ASCII codes (%20 etc.). Apple Mail, Gmail, and other e-mail clients do the proper URL encoding using the percent sign with two hexadecimal digits. The only straightforward workaround I can come up with for Reply to Group or Reply to Sender in a digest is to use the Groups.io web interface, which is still daunting for some members. I would love it if Shal, a veteran Thunderbird user, would chime in on this. -- Robert R. |
