It may be something similar to invitations (in addition to the record keeping.)? If you don't remove an invitation from the list, it can be used at any time in the future.? There have been a couple of problems where someone was booted from a group and got back in because they still had the invitation.? If there were no expiration on removals, the same thing could happen (at a much later date.)
