Thanks, but I have sussed it. During my testing I was unsubscribing and resubscribing email addresses but not deleting their accounts. So an account created before I had set the time zone for the group held on to the default time zone even when I unsubscribed and resubscribed it. Having deleted the accounts and then resubscribed the email addresses (and thus recreated their accounts) they have picked up the group time zone. All makes sense.
