Setting up a 'placeholder' group . . . .

This question may have been
asked before but I don't recall and if so I cannot locate it anywhere:

If I set up a named group in
Groups.io as a 'placeholder' in anticipation of an eventual move to Groups.io
of our existing YGroups group of that same name [let's call it 'MyNewGroup'],
and 'MyNewGroup' sits idle until we finally decide to proceed with the move,
then how long can our .io group sit idle without being removed (if that's a
possibility) before we need to do something about making our move and occupying
it?

sentence above but I was trying to make my question as comprehensive as possible.

Suggestions?? Observations??
Anything I maybe overlooked??
