I believe the home page editor and the message editor are the same, and you can certainly embed anything you want, using the Source Code mode. The problem is that many HTML constructs are stripped upon save. Examples include javascript, lots of inline CSS, forms and iframes (exhaustive list not available). If I recall correctly, the Google calendar embed code is implemented as an iframe.
As noted, you can petition to have these restrictions removed my means of a post in beta. I wouldn't expect the notion to get much traction, however, as several of these constructs can be misused as a vector for phishing and malware.
