Is there any way to get back automatically to the attachment list,
without having to go through the process of Admin > Upgrade > etc

What I normally do with any page that has a lot of links to follow (and a list certainly qualifies) is open the list item by using Ctrl+Shift+LeftClick instead of plain LeftClick. In most browsers this opens the link in a new tab, and switches you to that tab. In Firefox this can also be done with RightClick over the link then select "Open Link in New Tab".

Do what you need to do in the new tab, then close the tab. In Firefox this automatically drops me back into the tab I came from - the list page.
