Having created one groups.io premium account, ...
Just a point of terminology, upgrading to premium applies to your (primary) group (and its subgroups).

Accounts are tied to user email addresses and they are all free regardless of the number of groups you may be in or own.

can I transfer the Yahoo conversations from a different group as a
subgroup of the premium [group]? How can I start the process?
Yes. You need to create the subgroup within the primary group, and then when you initiate a transfer you can select the subgroup as the destination rather than the primary.

Take note of the page Frances and Bruce cited about the relationship between subgroups and their primary group so that you can be sure that a transfer into a subgroup makes sense for your situation.
