In my testing just now, I thought I would try rejecting through email, rather than on the group site. The needs Message Approval Needed email says: To reject this message using email, and to have the sender notified of this, forward this message to:
GroupManagersForum+reject+1905519+19+3587565863729549762@groups.io

It is not particularly intuitive. I finally figured out that I must copy the Reject link (e-mail address), then click on FORWARD for the full Message Approval Needed email, and paste in the copied address in the new (forwarding) email.
Be sure to send the forwarding email from your owner/moderator email address. I just tested again and if you have a rejection notice, using the forwarding adds that notice to the email notification.
