* Is it only information on my "Account Profile" which is made public?
When I set my own group profile to public, I can see the following when not logged in:

Photo
Display Name
User Name
Joined date
Location
Web site
Link to all messages by me
My "bio"

So, additional information that is visible are the date that you joined and a link to all messages posted by you (if such messages can be viewed by the public). And your chosen privacy setting is not visible.

* Will people be able to contact me if I make my profile public?
Only if you put your contact details in your "bio". You can put your e-mail address in the bio, and make it a hyperlink, if you want to.

* Can I see what my profile looks like to the public?
Yes. Make it public, and visit it using a different browser. The URL is: /g/<groupname>/profile/@<profilename>

* Is there a way to search for public profiles?
Fortunately (or unfortunately) not. From the home page, you can search for groups, but not for people. If the group's messages are public, then members of the public can visit the group's messages and search for a person by name (but not by e-mail address or by profile name).
