(Will this happen, or will the attachments stay in storage even though the corresponding message is no longer there?)

I just tested and deleting a topic (or message) deletes the attachment. In Photos, I can see the amount of storage going down after I delete some. Just go to Photos - menu on the left in your group home.

As far a jumping down a list, you can't jump ahead except the small amount displayed but you can change the number of items displayed on the screen. Go to your name in the top right corner. Choose Account, Preferences, change the number for Items per Page. (Some reported problems with infinite scroll.)
Be sure to Update Preferences at the bottom of the page.

I can’t find any way to jump to the oldest message other than change the date order … is that correct?

Just by using the toggle beside word date - the little blue triangle.
