I am going to speculate that you have your group set such that messages are not publicly visible.
I may be wide of the mark but I am going to guess that while you invited them to join your group what they have done is gone and visit the home page but haven't actually done anything about joining. Had they done so you would have had a blizzard of notofications about them all.
Just visiting a Home Page does not make people members.
They actually gave to go through the process of joining. Chris.
