You are right - muting does take you to the website. You need to confirm the muting.
Minimal interaction with the website though. I attach screenshots. However you couldn't unmute easily without going to the website. Email commands to change your subscription, but it doesn't do Advanced Preferences -? To receive plain digests instead of individual messages
To receive full featured digests instead of individual messages
To receive a daily summary instead of individual messages
To receive individual messages instead of digests or a summary
To only receive special messages
If you think most of your members will want to set their subscriptions to Advanced Preferences, you might set that as Default Subscription Preferences - in Admin, Settings, second tab.
