Debbie -- As you have discovered, you cannot search the groups list for keywords and use the tabs at left to further filter the resulting hits. The two functions are mutually exclusive.
This would be a good suggestion for improvement. The official "suggestion box" for is the beta group (). I wouldn't expect it to happen anytime soon, though.
