I can't figure out how to log back in using the alternative email,
because I previously dted that subscriber,

Removing the address from your group's Members list doesn't delete the account associated with that address. The existence of that account is what blocks you from making it an alias address to another address' account.

and also I never created a login (password) for that email in the
first place.

You can log into it without a password.

Log out from the Groups site (or open a browser which is not logged in). Then go to the Log In page and click the "Email me a link to log in" button, and enter into that page the alternative email address.

Groups.io will send to that address an email message containing a coded link. Click that and you'll be logged in to the account of the alternative address. Now you can check to ensure that it is not subscribed to any groups, and then delete the account.
