Tom,

Currentlly when you direct add a member to a group and connected
subgroups an email is generated for each one.
I believe that you can uncheck the Active box in the Welcome notices of each of the subgroups to prevent them from being sent automatically. The notices are stored in the Member Notices tab of each (sub)group's Settings page.
