However, our direct add of 98 members came up with a notice that we need to wait for approval. I cannot find information about the approval process or timescale.

Fortunately there is nothing further you need to do. As you've discovered approval often happens quickly.

Now a little weirder. I just got a mail saying: "This is to notify you that your pending additions to [email protected] have been approved and sent out." but our group shows no new members...

That is strange. The wording "and sent out" implies that you used the Invite feature rather than Direct Add. On the other hand, "pending additions" sounds more like Direct Add.

If you go to the Invite page, and click the Sent Invitations button there does it show your list of invitees?

If you go to the Activity page are there entries that say whether those addresses were invited or direct added?
