I was wondering if there is a way that a member would be able to add
an event by sending an email with all the details to the group and
have it automatically get added to the calendar.

Also, the phrase "a calendar invite" suggests to me that the invitation has to be generated as an ICS format attachment to a message (and possibly only works from at Outlook calendar).
