This is necessary to ensure that groups.io can reach them...they must click on the link in that email to begin to receive any groups.io messages. Of course, if the confirmation message lands in their spam/junk email folder -- or the subscriber we're talking about is uber-conservative about clicking on links in messages -- the whole thing becomes problematical.
