In groups.io, you have to manually append or insert excerpts from the original message in your post. When replying online, click on the "quote bubble" at the far left end of the taskbar (to the left of the "Formats" pull-down). How to do this via email depends on what email client you are using.

The problem may be Gmail. Sylvia has a Gmail address. Members of my groups responding via Gmail tend (not all) to have problems with overquoting or not quoting when replying and tend to be frustrated at being unable to resolve it. I don't do Gmail so can't offer more than this observation.
