... still don’t understand why choosing mute for a given message
doesn’t hold over past the current day.

Another place to check is the Messages section of the group in question. Change to "Topics" - if the message you received more recently isn't grouped with the message that you muted then somehow it wasn't considered to be the same topic - and that would prevent your Mute of that topic from blocking the newer message.

Why it didn't fall into the same topic would then be its own mystery to resolve.
