I was in a similar situation about six months ago, and as their webmaster (and guru of all thing internet), I had a non-profit board to answer to.
At this point there is no evidence that groups.io will be ephemeral; but if you really want it to stick around, you need to support it with your $$$. Although we had no real need for the features that a Premium group provides, that's what our board decided to do, as in investment in groups.io's future.?
The bottom line is that you already know what Y!G is like. Rather than fretting about the future of groups.io, I believe your board should be more concerned about sticking with a provider that has already made it apparent that they don't give a [expletive deleted]. Abandon that sinking ship while you still can.
