When someone sends a private reply to a message, is there any way to
make that reply visible on the message thread on the website (only for
the sender and receiver, of course)?
I don't believe so. I think "private" might be better described as "offlist" or "direct". Nor is it logged anywhere.

As a sender, if you want to keep a copy you need to use the BCC Me checkbox.
