Question about the use of the word flutist

I had a question regarding the word flutist. If someone plays the flute, regardless if it is professional or not, is it proper to use this word? I once did that with someone over the phone, and they got all hot and bothered, telling me to stop referring to myself as a flutist because I do not play professionally.

If you play a flute, you're a flutist.? Nobody is saying you're a professional, or even a very good flute player.? It's not a judgment call, it's just a fact.? That's a flute, you play it, therefore you're a flutist.? If you live in Britain (I know you don't, but if you did), you'd be a flautist.

Will do. Not sure what I'm gonna do with the flute today. I'll probably run through some pieces. Especially those from Star Wars. I'll even run through some Christian hymns. My E flat three spoke clearly yesterday. I wonder if I can get it to do it again. We'll see.

I don't care whether people call me a flutist. You can call me anything but late to a free buffet.

that's hilarious. I play the flute, so therefore I am a flutist professional or not. By the way, I don't know if I told you guys, but I work at a restaurant called BJ's. I went host of the year both locally and regionally for my location here in Florida.
