Re: PSA drop and brief history

Ed:
Thanks for sharing your history. One more thing-- if I may ask-- what made your doctor check for Prostate Cancer if your PSA was only 1.9 at the outset? (Seems rather a low level for alarm.) Typically, they say that up to 4.0 is normal in a man that still has a prostate. Was there something that made your physician suspicious enough to test for Prostate Cancer other than your PSA level of 1.9? How did your physician determine that you had PC? Sorry if I seem to be asking too many questions, but I really seek to understand the nature of this particular disease. Every person is affected differently and though it seems from your history that yours (like my husband's) is particularly aggressive so it is a testament to the BP that it showing benefit for you in a relatively short amount of time! I'm very excited for you and I want to encourage you to keep it up and keep us posted! I am having a hard time coming up with the true recipe. I thought it would be easy. Most of the sites have some of the grain sprouted and the rest of the recipe is just grains. Mel's update
Melanie King
I wanted to just take a couple of minutes to tell you how I'm doing.
I was diagnosed with breast cancer July 2006. I immediately began to research alternative cures for cancer, and by the time they were ready to start cutting on me I knew better. Unfortunately, this was not before I had biopsies on both breasts. Still, the information I gained from the biopsies has helped me to know what I am dealing with. I actually joined this group way back then, but I was not ready to commit to the Budwig Protocol. A couple of things held me up. I just really wasn't ready to give up my supplements, and I was working with a nutritionist who was very adamantly against dairy. One of the really difficult things when you start down this path is to sort through all the conflicting information and figure out who to listen to. Over this past year, I have found myself struggling to stick to any one particular plan, because there was always some new idea screaming for my attention. From July to November, I actually saw some positive signs. I was 180+ lbs when I started, and as I changed to a mostly raw food diet and began to exercise the pounds just naturally dropped off. At about Thanksgiving time, I began to have serious digestive discomfort. I tried to ignore it and just keep doing what I was doing, but in January I finally went to see my doctor. He just wanted to give me pills. My nutritionist was trying to get me to add more supplements. I continued to feel lousy. Around March, I had about 3 or 4 weeks where I actually felt pretty good and was thinking about getting seriously back on all my supplements and strict diet again. Then I started feeling not-so-good. Still, it was an on-again, off-again, thing, and I just kept limping along. This summer I began reading this list regularly again and decided that I really wanted to get serious about Budwig. I wasn't taking the supplements anyway because I was too sick, and the expense of them was too great anyway. As I was gearing up to get started, I got really sick in early July. I had about a week straight that I could keep absolutely nothing down, and I was in constant pain. Though 110 lbs. is a perfectly acceptable weight for me, I was losing weight at about 5 lbs a week, and those closest to me were telling me how absolutely horrible I looked. At that point, I broke down and went to a gastroenterologist. They did an endoscopy and a CT scan. I was told that I had a hiatal hernia and gall stones. Additionally, they saw scattered suspicious lesions on my bones, and I have acites, both of which are signs of probable metastasis. (A year ago I was told based on my PET scan that there was no metastasis.) Knowing the cause of my digestive issues, a little research told me that Budwig would be good for the digestive symptoms as well. Also, knowing that I now may have metastasis (probably caused by the biopsies), gave me the incentive to get serious about the protocol. I did take the medication that the gastroenterologist recommended for 30 days, stopping it last week when my supply ran out. I have been doing Budwig since July 17th, so right at a month. During this time, I have had almost no reflux and no abdominal pain. I did incorporate Smooth Move tea into my regimin on about an every-other-day basis for a couple of weeks. Now my bowels, which basically had not functioned at all for the past 6 months, are functioning regularly. The only thing I am doing in addition to the Budwig Protocol is I am taking 2 T. daily of Ambrotose. I have about 10 tubs of it (probably about $1300 worth) that a friend has been sending to me for months, so I am going to take it. Overall, I feel great and and am functioning at 110%. Though I haven't decided what kind of monitoring I might do, I hope to be able to tell you in a few months that I am cancer free. One thing about having this huge breast tumor with no body fat left is that it is easily monitored, so it could be that I will have a good indicator of how I am doing without any additional testing. I'll keep you posted! Melanie |

A few days ago when there was all the discussion about making your 2nd FO/CC ahead of time, I began to do this. This has helped me SO much to be more compliant, such a timesaver. I mix the entire thing except for the flaxseeds, which I grind and mix in right before I eat it. Anyway, when I started doing this I used twice as much FO/CC and milk, but kept the other ingredients the same. I use only 1/2 a banana, a handful of blueberries, and a handful of nuts, and a dash of stevia powder for my entire daily dose. It tastes fine and cuts down on the bulk. From: Sandra Olson Hi Bronwynn, Use a lower calorie fruit than banana for the focc shake. Berries are the best cancer fighting fruits & are recommended by JB and in our Introduction. They are about 85 calories for a cup - use half in each focc instead of banana - omit 20 calories. . |

Thank you all so much for your advice. Sandra, I cannot tell you how much I appreciate you taking the time to disect and adjust each item on my list. You are an absolute Angel and I will jump right on top of it ALL. I guess I was just in the mindset of "Do everything Johanna says so you can continue to LIVE" I did not take the time to apply, I don't know, LOGIC to my situation. I'll blame chemo-brain for that one. Or my blonde hair. Both are good excuses :) And I have to say, at the very end of your post, when you were talking about how excercise is ok if you are not seriously ill with metastasis, I just MELTED when you said "You no longer have mets". That made my night, my week, my month AND my year! You are so right. And although I have been telling myself that and telling you all the same, you are the very first person to say it like that. It was beautiful and I loved it. Thank you. I will make ALL the adjustments that you and others have taken the time to advise me of. Peace :)

Re: Brain tumor re-growth-(final report)
Ben,
It sounds like your wife was dynamic and knew which paths to take. You supported her decisions, and quite obviously helped her maintain them to the end. You are lucky (you may not feel like it now) to have had such a wonderful and active life together. And to be able to live your chosen life. This is what true life is about. What a life well spent. She will always be with you, in your head, your heart, your memories, and in all the other lives she has touched. I doubt she would have chosen any further allopathic treatments, from what you said of her personality. You were there for her and your love must have meant so much to her, you did everything you could. As someone who has had cancer, I have thought a lot about death, and I've come to realise that the real pain is with the people around me and not in myself. I could cope with what was and is thrown at me. She would not want you to suffer. Be strong, and I hope you find peace in the knowledge there was nothing more you could have done. Michele |

Thanks, Melanie and Rachael,
You each explained it well. One thing that I forgot to add to my message is that in each of her books, Dr. Budwig referred to her menu list as "GUIDELINES." She definitely didn't mean that each person should eat all the foods she listed in the menu. Re: BP = 2,150 calories/day = TOO MUCH FOR ME...
Hi Bronwynn,
In our Introduction to the Budwig Protocol, we say not to overeat. Stuffing yourself isn't good. Let's see what you can omit. Wine is optional, so you can eliminate that & omit 150 calories. Stop all nuts except 2 Brazil nuts a day for selenium, omit 120. Cut the dinner of veggies & grains in half, omit 100 calories. Rice milk is not part of the BP & should not be used. Use skim or low fat milk instead or fruit juice. Cut the amount of papaya in half, omit 60 calories. Use a lower calorie fruit than banana for the focc shake. Berries are the best cancer fighting fruits & are recommended by JB and in our Introduction. They are about 85 calories for a cup - use half in each focc instead of banana - omit 20 calories. Are you using Barleans FO? Their container says that the calories are 120 per tblsp. That's 720 for 6 tblsp. Omit 60 calories. Nancy's low fat CC has 80 calories for one half cup CC. The FOCC recipe requires only a half cup per serving. That comes to 160 calories for 2 servings rather than 200. Omit 40. This eliminates over 500 calories from your daily menu, bringing your total calories for the day down to about 1600. If you take a 20 minute brisk walk every day, that may take off another 200 bringing your total down again to 1400 for the day. If you stay with this plan you may be able to lose weight. Also, rebounding on a mini-tram is especially good for moving the lymph system and another good way to use calories. Because you are in remission now, you do not have to follow JB's rule about mets meaning no exercise. You no longer have mets. Best wishes, Sandra "Bronwynn" wrote: PLEASE HELP. I agree with Rachael about tweaking the calorie intake to fit your frame, and I also don't think there's anything wrong with exercising a bit more to burn those extra calories. I know Dr. Budwig said something to the effect that very ill patients shouldn't overdo it, but I wouldn't limit myself to 20 minutes if I felt okay doing more. For one thing, if you have estrogen positive breast cancer, your cancer feeds off of the estrogen stored in all those excess fat cells, so I think losing the extra pounds is important.

I am only 5 ft and 110 lbs. I find it hard to believe this diet was intended to be exactly the same for a 5 ft, 110 lbs. woman as a 6ft 4in, 300 lbs man so I just cut the portion size on everything except the FO/CC (since this is the "foundation" of BP I don't dare mess with it.) I drink veggie juices, eat salads w/ only vinegar or lemon, and small portions of veggies, many times no grains and I don't eat oleolux or drink wine at all. I take only 4 tsp of the whole flax seed ground up each day & eat only about 6 Brazil nuts daily. My weight has leveled off with no weight gain. I drink green teas also. Only eat fruits, usually organic strawberries, with my FO/CC and only use stevia and organic cinnamon or small amt of organic cocoa to flavor it. I don't use any milk. I think you just need to tweak the diet until you find the right caloric intake for you.
Rachael Bronwynn <lovebronwynn@...> wrote: PLEASE HELP. I"M SICK OF BEING FAT!!! I am doing the diet part EXACTLY as it is outlined. Re: BP and Warfarin
Nelson Doucet
Ilona,
Flax oil will thin the blood. If he continues on Warfarin he will be monitoring his blood. If the Dr. indicates the need to lower the Warfarin dosage you will know that the flax oil is having an effect. At that time you may want to mention he is taking the flax. As far as the Lipitor for cholesterol I would do a search as this is a statin drug with serious side effects. See High cholesterol levels causing heart attacks are mostly a myth. Half of the sudden heart attacks are individuals with high and half are with low cholesterol. If plaque buildup (leading to clogged arties) is a concerned a good test one can do is C-Reactive Protein (CRP)and homocysteine levels. High levels over time indicate plaque buildup. Of course not too profitable for the Pharma as a combination of folate acid, B6 and B12 lowers both quite well. Nelson |
Re: BP = 2,150 calories/day = TOO MUCH FOR ME...
Bronwynn,
Perhaps instead of cutting out part of the menu, you can just cut down on portions. If you are gaining unwanted weight, it would make sense to scale back the amounts more than cutting out things which might be crucial. Budwig did not want people overeating any more than eating unhealthy. Eating smaller portions should help keep from feeling so full. It is hard to give a detailed list of how and what to eat and not get too complex, but what you might need at 5'3" is not the same as a 6'4" man. If you have the time to walk twice as day that may help as well. It wouldn't increase the stress, but would speed up the weight loss. Hopefully by making small adjustments, you can find "your ideal" amounts. Keep up the great work! Martha --- "Bronwynn" wrote: already taken out the Champagne since I found out it was optional. Re: Quark/cottage cheese from milk - kosher
Rhoda Mead
Hi Bella, Yes. Cottage cheese is the most difficult. There are several
possibilities. You can use a yogurt starter or probiotic starter to make Yogurt, and then strain the yogurt to make yogurt cheese. I do this using organic dried milk powder. No idea whether it is kosher. Or you can get kefir grains and make kefir. I did this a while, but didn;t like the taste as much, I am not Orthodox. However, it is my understanding that one may relax the rules when seriously ill. For instance, not fasting on Yom Kippur. If you have little strength, can you start by using Nancy's Cottage cheese, and start to make your own when you are ready to do so? Rhoda |
