I know not everyone is into lyrical archaeology.? But I am, so.

Hot on the heels of my recent confirmation that some of the lyrics to "Oh! Brother" come from > The Hunchback of Notre Dame, > I've just tracked down what is almost certainly the source of the "Used table leg to club son-in-law" line in "2 x 4".

The earliest known performance of "2 x 4" was at Rock City, Nottingham, on 27 September 1983.

In the > Manchester Evening News> ?of 20 August 1983 (p29), I found the following headline:

"Father, 70, used table leg to club his son-in-law".

I don't think this is a coincidence.? And of course not the only example of newspaper headlines getting incorporated into Fall lyrics.
