CW Character Spacing

k4pby

Hello--I am new to the group. I am using WinWarbler ver 4.5.0 and have been very pleased with it. I have one problem that I am trying to solve though. When operating CW someties characters get run together with no spacing. For instance, AN would be transmitted as a P.The transmit window indicates AN but P is actually sent (AN with no character spacing). This does not happen all of the time but ofen enough that I don't trust it. I have tried varying the character spacing value and other parameters on the cw setup but it still happens.I would appreciate ieas on a solution. My CW setup is configured as so: Keyboard Mode(auto stop, auto start, character) and Weight(Dot/dash 1:3,element space 1, character space 3, word space 3)
Thanks--Chuck K4PBY

On the Config window's CW tab, which option is selected in the Keying panel?

Hi Dave---It is configured Parallel Port (LPT3 Data 5 pin 7)

With that setting, Windows is generating the CW timing. Unfortunately,
Windows is not a real-time operating system, so even though WinWarbler runs
its CW-generation at the highest possible priority, simply moving your mouse
while transmitting CW can yield erratic timing. If you have other
applications simultaneously running, or if your PC is light on horsepower
and/or RAM, these factors can contribute to the problem. Minimizing the load
on your CPU and RAM while working CW is the least expensive approach.
Another approach is to acquire a WinKey -- a small hardware device that
accepts characters from WinWarbler and does the CW generation. You can build
a WinKey serial port kit for as little as $36 (see
<>) or you can purchase a fancier USB
kit for about double that price (see <>).
Several commercial products also incorporate WinKey circuits, e.g.
MicroHam's product line (see
<>). WinWarbler can also use a
KAM, PSK232, or MFJ HF modem as a CW generator; these are often
inexpensively available via flea markets or EBay (e.g. see

Thanks very much for your reply and yes I am runing a bit light computer wise. I think I will try the WinKeyer approach--I have built some of K1EL's other kits in the past. BTW,I am new to operating the digital modes and found your WinWarbler software to be the one I liked best after playing with a few others. Nice work! 73--Chuck
