The damage is done before the delete key can be used. Lacking a
"bounce" a commercial e-mail generator can assume the address is,
at least, valid. Filters require reviewing anything in "SPAM" to
confirm the filter is not triggering falsely on valid e-mail and
that opens one to hidden payloads.
Unsolicited commercial e-mail is, arguably, an illegal invasion
of one's privacy and everything should be done to discourage such
activity. If one really wants a confirmation they can mail a
physical card or use LotW ... or, forbid, send a personal e-mail.

That would be great, Joe. Unfortunately not everyone belongs to ARRL (and
more are leaving...I wonder why!),
and its highly unlikely ARRL would provide such a service to us sorters.
ARRL has indicated its funding for the
incoming buro is living on borrowed time.

Perhaps ARRL should provide legitimate bureau staff access to the
member directory (with e-mail) rather than require amateurs to
expose themselves to additional unsolicited commercial (spam)
e-mail in order to receive cards from the bureau.
In any case, e-mail should not be necessary if users keep envelopes
(with current address) on file with the bureau. We certainly did
not have access to e-mail 40 years ago when I was a letter manager
with the 8th area bureau. In the worst case a post card to the
station's Callbook address was sufficient.

There have been lots of suggestions here about handling the
electronic/email QSLs. Each has it's merit, and it's an individual choice
on how to handle them.
From where I sit, if you want cards from the buro, you need to provide
an
email address where QRZ.com provides the field for you to enter it.

What if one would remove the email address and then put it close to the

As a buro card sorter who relies on QRZ.com, I hope this advice is not
taken to heart. We rely on QRZ to get email addresses to communicate
with
buro account holders! When there's no email address, the alternative is
to
waste postage and envelopes to try to contact buro users. That gets to
be a
big expense after a while.
