UV-5RH Issues

Jim Mitchell

I just received my UV-5RH, and I am not able to read or write from the thing. I've tried with both the T6UV and CHIRP software, but it always fails. Not only that, but I even bought two more programming cables (never hurts to have spares, amirite?) and they don't help. When I try to read/write, the picture of the computer comes up on the radio screen, but no data is transferred. In T6UV, it just says "Failure". In CHIRP, using the 5RM model, the message is "Error reading data from radio: not the amount of data we want". Any tips before I send this back?

Firmware: 1.05
Hardware: V01

What happens when you use the chirp? BF-F8HP model, as advised on the "Supported Radios" page?

Nothing happens. It doesn't even display the picture of the computer on the radio.

Hi,
I had a similar problem with a recently purchased baofeng and quansheng also and after much trouble another member of our radio club told me that he had to apply alot more pressure than previous radios to press the cable into the radio to get the cables to connect. I have found that an easy test to see if the plug is fully inserted, manually program in a frequency and get someone else to call you without the plug into the radio, this will confirm the radio is hearing their transmission. Repeat with the plug inserted. You now should not hear the transmission and cable is inserted? correctly. Hope this solves the problem.

Thanks, Bob. I did make sure it was plugged in completely. I even exercised the plug in and out, just in case it was an internal connectivity fluke. Still no go. I ended up sending it back.

I noticed you never mentioned using RT Systems.
Chirp has always been a problem child? for me.? I've used RT Systems on Baofeng, Icom, Kenwood, and Yaesu.? They are always problem free and work the first time every time right out of the box.? The only caveat is to make sure to use their cables.

I agree, I have never been able to get Chirp to work with any of my HT.?

Jim I wrestled with my UV-5RA when trying to connect. The Miklor.com site has been good for me. Using the correct driver is my issue and with the Prolific chipset I have to use the 3.2.0.0 driver.?

when you bring up the site you will pictures of radio by manufacturer and click the UV-5R. When reviewing either software, firmware or driver information read it all as there are recommendations for problems that exist.?

my one problem was the radio could receive but no audio. I did get good guidance from Miklor.com to resolve.?

Thanks, Dave. I did think about RT Systems, but couldn't justify spending the money on their software and cable on a maybe. I ended up returning the 5RH. My 5RM is a great radio, although I did order a TIDRADIO TD-H8 (2nd Gen) for the Bluetooth programming capability.?

I tried the miklor site but was not and to find a driver, just individual files that didn't seem to work.

I did see the whole thread about the prolific driver, but I tried 3 different cables (2 FTDI and a different one that requires no driver) and none of them worked. All of my other radios worked flawless with all of those cables. It¡¯s a shame as the 5RH was a really nice radio, but the 5RM is essentially the same thing and I have it working perfectly. Love it.

I also checked on the group website and there is no image, just a placeholder.

Maybe a link to the page where it's at instead?
