Re: UV-5R Dual band mod to 220 MHz band
I'm not sure how it got pinned, but I unpinned the thread and it is as the rest
are now. I receive my posts by email, so I would not know if something got pinned or not unless I paid a visit to the group site. Re: UV-5R Dual band mod to 220 MHz band
The topic appears to be getting stale, but I'll respond since it's pinned...
Since I've recently been on an APRS kick, I ordered a second uv5r for dedicated aprs use. I was able to successfully unlock the 1.25m band, and here is a shot of what that looks like (60db pad was installed for all my tests): I can't imagine anyone would call that useable. Regardless, this radio did test clean on the 2m and 70cm bands. Before I let that statement encourage purchasing... I should add that yesterday I also retested my older uv5r. That radio did test clean on 2m and 70cm out of the box, but here is how it looks now: So my old one is garbage, and I assume I'll have to keep retesting the new one every couple weeks so I can take it off air before it goes illegal on me. Lesson learned... no more Baofeng for this kid. |
Programming Boafeng UV5RA3 & UV5RX3 With Chirp for 220
Some of you may have already attempted to program 220 freqs on your UV5R*3 with Chirp which resulted in permanently disabling the radio's 220 ability. Here's what you must do. #1, You must use the latest version of Chirp requiring Windows 10 or later on a 64 bit machine. You can not use Chirp Legacy! #2, Set Chirp to Radioddity UV5RX3. Download from the radio's it's factory image file and save it. #3, Inter all the frequency channel data you want.? #4, Selected "advanced settings". At the bottom of the list read "Range Override Parameter". The factory setting is "default". Change this to "atyourownrisk". You can not paste it in.(see attached) #5, Upload data to your radio. If you have a second radio to program you must repeat step #4.? #6, Save as:?Radioddity_UV-5RX3 UseAtOwnRisk The "Range Override Parameter" will go back to "default" after every download, and it can not be save. Notes on 220 in other Baofeng UV5's: Contrary to what you have seen on youtube videos, changing the range of a UV5R will not allow operation on 220. While the radio may accept programming on that band, it will not function. Of the 5 radios that I did this to, only one had measurable output power, and it had heavily distorted audio. Earlier UV5RA3 versions specifically built to included 220 do not appear to require the special care outlined above. I have programmed them with Chirp legacy without issue. You will not see the advanced settings menu in Chirp Legacy that you have in the Windows 10/64 version. Dennis Starks Military-Radio-Guy KB?SFP |

I also checked on the group website and there is no image, just a placeholder.
/g/Baofeng/message/445 Maybe a link to the page where it's at instead? I did see the whole thread about the prolific driver, but I tried 3 different cables (2 FTDI and a different one that requires no driver) and none of them worked. All of my other radios worked flawless with all of those cables. It¡¯s a shame as the 5RH was a really nice radio, but the 5RM is essentially the same thing and I have it working perfectly. Love it.

Thanks, Dave. I did think about RT Systems, but couldn't justify spending the money on their software and cable on a maybe. I ended up returning the 5RH. My 5RM is a great radio, although I did order a TIDRADIO TD-H8 (2nd Gen) for the Bluetooth programming capability.?

Re: UV-5RH Issues
Jim I wrestled with my UV-5RA when trying to connect. The Miklor.com site has been good for me. Using the correct driver is my issue and with the Prolific chipset I have to use the 3.2.0.0 driver.? when you bring up the site you will pictures of radio by manufacturer and click the UV-5R. When reviewing either software, firmware or driver information read it all as there are recommendations for problems that exist.?

I noticed you never mentioned using RT Systems.
Chirp has always been a problem child? for me.? I've used RT Systems on Baofeng, Icom, Kenwood, and Yaesu.? They are always problem free and work the first time every time right out of the box.? The only caveat is to make sure to use their cables.

Re: UV-5RH Issues
Hi, I had a similar problem with a recently purchased baofeng and quansheng also and after much trouble another member of our radio club told me that he had to apply alot more pressure than previous radios to press the cable into the radio to get the cables to connect. I have found that an easy test to see if the plug is fully inserted, manually program in a frequency and get someone else to call you without the plug into the radio, this will confirm the radio is hearing their transmission. Repeat with the plug inserted. You now should not hear the transmission and cable is inserted? correctly. Hope this solves the problem. Bob? I've tried with both the T6UV and CHIRP software, but it always fails. Not only that, but I even bought two more programming cables (never hurts to have spares, amirite?) and they don't help. When I try to read/write, the picture of the computer comes up on the radio screen, but no data is transferred. In T6UV, it just says "Failure". In CHIRP, using the 5RM model, the message is "Error reading data from radio: not the amount of data we want". Any tips before I send this back? |
