More info...

I installed the CPS from the Radioddity site and it also does not work.
Settings -> Port COM1
Program -> Read form radio
Click Start
"hand shake..."
"failure!"?

My gut feeling is that the radio is defective. :(
New (to me) UV-5RX3 programming

 

First post here, hello.

I was gifted a UV-5RX3 and I am unable to get CHIRP (next) to read it. I have selected the Radioddity UV-5RX3 model and the correct com ports - which is either a real Serial port on COM1? or a pair of other USB Serial cables (COM5 and 6) I am able to use successfully for other radios (Kenwood TH-G71A and TYT UV-H88), I've even tried the Prolific Cable that came in the box and Windows 10 installed a driver for it, but it keys the transmitter, so it was uninstalled.

With the any of the serial ports I am getting a "Radio did not respond" error.

The Firmware on the display says BFS001 and I am aware that this may be meaningless.

Is it possible to test the serial communication with a terminal emulator? What serial parameters and possible commands might retrieve a response? If the serial port is plain dead then I'll have to program what I want added by hand (uggg).

Squelch on my Baofengs are all set for 2.

Otherwise, you may be between a rock and a hard place.? I've had nothing but trouble with Chirp.? I'd say keep looking on RT Systems almost daily with one caveat. Your model has the word pro in it.? If it is marketed as a ham radio, you are golden. RT Systems is likely working on a program for it.
If it is marketed as a land mobile radio, RT Systems won't touch it.? They won't do any commercial radio.

A1) Yes, I can hear the repeater with tone turned off.
A2) Yes, there is a nearby uncoordinated repeater on the same frequency that often breaks squelch but is weak signal and unintelligible.? It's the reason this repeater transmits a tone.
A3) This repeater is only about six miles away.? I can hit it with full quieting from my HT.? Receiving is also full quieting.

You have said that you can't hear a repeater that transmits a ctcss tone when you have the ctcss receive turned on.
Q 1) can you hear the same repeater without the ctcss receive turned on?
Q2) if? "yes" - is ctcss receive? really necessary if your hearing ok ?
?Q3) if "no" does that repeater currently get to your location,? ?if you use another radio, antenna or even move around to get a signal from same repeater?

I have one that works just fine.? I use the RT Systems programmer for it, as I do on nearly all of my radios.

???? I'll second that.? In 2012 I got my Technician's license and bought a UV-5R as my first amateur radio.? After setting it up and programming all the local repeaters, I found I could hear everyone but no one responded to me.? It took me a while to figure out it wasn't transmitting (although I forget exactly how I was able to confirm it).? Had to wait for a replacement from the dealer before I could finally get on the air for the first time.

software because I doubt you'll get different results. Of course, you can try,
but I'd be surprised if it did anything different.

Is it possible you just got some duds and you need to return them for
replacement?

I wish we had a 220 MHz repeater around here but we don't. I've always felt it
was the fault of the ham community that we lost 2 MHz of the original 220-225
MHz band by not utilizing it as much as we did 2 meters and 440 MHz.

Thanks for the replies. I have loaded the UV-5rx software and it reads and writes to the radio properly. When I use the software to read the radio Frequency Range setting, it read the setting which is set to 144-146/430-432. When I select 136-260/400-520 from the drop down list the enable TX check box is checked but greyed out. When I write that setting to the radio is reports success and the radio responds. but when i read the radio again it is still the original Frequency Range Setting.?

I have also tried using Chirp to change vhf limits. but to no avail.?

I have tried full reset of the radio but nothing seems to correct the issue.

If You Are able to program them via using a "Chirp File" no Need to spend $ on RT,? If Memory Serves Me, The OV-S9X3 Needs to have the the 220 band "Activated" via a check box process using , I Dd a bunch a while back and ALL Worked After this.
I Need to Look Back at remembering the "Trick".

While I never had issues with CHIRP, RT Systems software is a bit more refined.
They also work hard to support other models that CHIRP doesn't support.

I just bought an Icom IC-9700 to round out my shack and ordered the RT Systems
software for it. I know there is a free program someone makes to manage the
memories in Icom radios, but I didn't feel like learning another program.

You won't go wrong with RT Systems. They provide support, too, if you need it,
something CHIRP doesn't do, as far as I know. That's why I started the CHIRP
group, where members can help other members.

Our club has bulk purchased a bunch of Baofeng UV-S9X3 to sell or give away to new hams. The UV-S9X3 is a tri-band radio that makes a great introductory radio. We have a Chirp file we use to program the radios with our local standard frequency list. the list includes 2 meter, 1.25 meter, and 70 cm repeaters and simplex frequencies.?
The issue is with a few of the radios, they will not transmit on 220. Utilizing Chirp they program just fine, but will not transmit on 220, while the rest of the bunch do program and transmit on 220.?

Any help in solving this issue would be greatly appreciated.

I finally solved the programming issue this morning.
Stopped trying to use CHIRP-Next and used CHIRP-Legacy.? ?
Now no problem programming/reprogramming my UV-9R PROs HTs with CHIRP.
Maybe my Operator Error, maybe the BETA of CHIRPNext isn't new BaoFeng friendly by that file type, I'm not sure the actual issue.
BUT, I got it to work successfully and reprogrammed my 2 new BaoFeng HTs same as my old 2 BaoFeng HTs.
Gotta luv software issues.? ?NOT.

The software from RT is a bit more polished than CHIRP. I can't say it's better,
but they do tweak it to work on more radios. I think their way of getting
repeaters near you to fill up your memories is better than the other way, but
neither takes into consideration that many repeaters are just "paper repeaters"
that have the repeater coordinator's OK to use the frequency but it's not online
or never was.
