BABF: Two Weeks to Go: See What*s Coming to Downtown Berkeley
From page to stage, festival weekend is almost here. Come for books, ideas, community, and a fun weekend out exploring worlds. From Page to Stage: The Bay Area Book Festival Is Almost Here! The Bay Area Book Festival is where ideas, movements, and curiosity meet the page and the stage. In less than two weeks, Downtown Berkeley transforms into a living library〞a vibrant community alive with stories, creativity, and connection. Take a scroll with us through the Bookworm Block Party and explore a sneak peek at where our indoor and outdoor stages will bring the festival to life! Click the image to be brought to a walkthrough video of Downtown Berkeley! See the 2025 Schedule Note from the Executive Director Dear Beloved Community, As we stand on the threshold of this year*s Bay Area Book Festival (May 31每June 1), my heart is full〞with anticipation, with hope, and with a fierce belief in what we can create together. In a world that so often asks us to armor up, to retreat into certainty or fear, I invite you to do something radical: show up, with your whole self, to this festival. Here, we gather not just to celebrate books, but to honor the messy, beautiful work of being human together. Our panels and conversations are meant to be more than intellectual exchanges〞they are spaces for courage, for vulnerability, for listening deeply and speaking truth. We need each other, now more than ever. The stories we share and the connections we forge can be acts of resistance, healing, and joy. This is an invitation to bring your heartbreak and your hope, your questions and your dreams. Let*s create a festival that is alive with empathy, where every voice matters and every story has a place. Together, we can imagine〞and build〞a world rooted in justice, compassion, and radical love. In gratitude, J. K. Fowler Executive Director PREPARING FOR FESTIVAL WEEKEND When it comes to planning your festival weekend, there will be something for everyone! Local theater needs your help...Please Act Now
? We need your voice on this Another blow to Performing Arts funding unless you add your voice now! Dear Central Works friends and supporters, I'll try to keep this brief. I'm sure you are all aware of the many cuts and cancellations of arts grants that have occurred over recent weeks by the Trump Administration. The last thing we imagined was a further body blow from Governor Gavin Newsom in his "May Revision" to the annual state budget. Early this year, a new state grant program was announced: The Performing Arts Equitable Payroll Fund Program, established by state legislation, with the specific aim of supporting small nonprofit performing arts organizations. The grant promised to refund awardees up to 90% of their payroll expenses from July 2024 through June 2025. The program was years in planning. Applications required enormous effort and documentary support, in addition to the stress of an extremely competitive pool of organizations for the relatively small fund of $11.5 million. Applications were submitted on March 10, and have been under review for the past 2 months. Then, last week, the Governor presented a proposed budget revision which completely withdraws the $11.5 million set aside for this program. In other words, he wants to kill it. The new budget proposal is scheduled for a vote in the state legislature in June. The performing arts community needs your help, so we're imploring you to make your voices heard, and soon! Here are some actions you can take*: PLEASE HELP SAVE THE PERFORMING ARTS EQUITABLE PAYROLL FUND PROGRAM! Call your legislator*s office. You can fund your legislator here: https://findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov/ Call the Governor*s office at (916) 445-2841 Email the CA State budget committee at AsmBudget@... and c/c the consultant of the subcommittee, Genevieve McCloy at genevieve.mccloy@.... We are so incredibly grateful for all of the support you provide to keep Central Works and new play development alive, and your help in this could make a world of difference to our continued survival, along with all of our colleagues and local theater companies. All the best, and thanks to each of you! Do you have questions or want more information? Reply to this message or call 510.558.1381. *Thanks to SFBATCO for this clearly enumerated list. Luna: Engage with Radical Research in Dance
May 31, 2025 Radical Research Panel deliberating & liberating dance practices Luna invests in dance research as a way to advance our field and investigate what dance research can be, who shares it, who has access to it, and how it can be presented. Radical Research highlights the legitimate and rigorous inquiry of BIPOC artists, whose experiences are often neglected by traditional institutions of research and education, and amplifies the diverse ways embodied research can be conducted through dance creativity. Artists, like scientists, approach their work from a place of inquiry. Sometimes the research question is fully formed, but more often curiosity spurs intuition that leads to discovery through rigorous creative practice. -Patricia Reedy, Founder/Co-Executive Director of Luna Join us on Saturday, May 31, 2025, 2:45pm-5pm (PT) for this free virtual panel presentation. RSVP The panel will feature the alternative and multi-faceted artistic approaches among these four distinguished BIPOC dance practitioners: Gerald Casel Tammy Johnson Bobi Lott M芋healani Uchiyama To learn more about the event and its panelists, click here!
