Dear Central Works friends and supporters,
I'll try to keep this brief. I'm sure you are all aware of the many cuts and cancellations of arts grants that have occurred over recent weeks by the Trump Administration. The last thing we imagined was a further body blow from Governor Gavin Newsom in his "May Revision" to the annual state budget.
Early this year, a new state grant program was announced: The Performing Arts Equitable Payroll Fund Program, established by state legislation, with the specific aim of supporting small nonprofit performing arts organizations. The grant promised to refund awardees up to 90% of their payroll expenses from July 2024 through June 2025. The program was years in planning. Applications required enormous effort and documentary support, in addition to the stress of an extremely competitive pool of organizations for the relatively small fund of $11.5 million.
Applications were submitted on March 10, and have been under review for the past 2 months. Then, last week, the Governor presented a proposed budget revision which completely withdraws the $11.5 million set aside for this program. In other words, he wants to kill it.
The new budget proposal is scheduled for a vote in the state legislature in June. The performing arts community needs your help, so we're imploring you to make your voices heard, and soon! Here are some actions you can take*:
