Dates for the next semester are Jan 4-May 23. A few updates to the schedule we wanted to hi-light: Our family dance class, Dance With Me will be offered Tuesdays afternoons as well as Saturday mornings. These are offered in 4-week mini-sessions. Plus we now have several levels of both Ballet and Hip-Hop. And for the first time, we are offering K-Pop dance and choreography for dancers 8+. Join CA for the Arts, your advocacy network organization. GAAP Applications Closing October 14 @ 5:00 pm PDT! Apply Today! For one more week, CA for the Arts is accepting submissions for the Grassroots Artists Advocacy Program (GAAP). GAAP is a cohort-based fellowship program for individual artist advocates, 18 years or older, who live or work in Oakland or San Francisco. Artist Advocates include diverse artists, culture bearers, and creative workers with a dedicated and committed artistic or cultural practice who directly engage in advocacy and policy development to advance the holistic well-being of the field. Each artist advocate will identify a change benefitting artists and/or culture bearers they want to make happen and be supported to develop an artist advocacy plan to enact that change. Applicants need to explain how their idea for policy change will eventually come to impact artists and culture bearers. GAAP awards a cohort of five artist advocates $12,000 each to participate in a nine-month advocacy curriculum that will launch in November 2024. The stipend is not a grant. The cohort members will dedicate 25 hours per month to attend in-person and Zoom meetings of the learning community and work on their advocacy plans. The GAAP application is open now and closes on October 14, 2024, at 5:00 pm PDT. From the Native American intimate relations of the poppy to the Spanishes Rancho to the American period- The Poppy has so deeply entered human culture November 2, 2024. 10.30 a.m. Tilden Regional Parks Botanical Garden. Richard will walk us through stories of the Native American interactions, beliefs, and uses of the California Poppy; the change of worlds when the Spanish arrived here with their livestock herds in the late eighteenth century; how the poppy struggled to survive the Gold Rush and the big squeeze- the American-era land development; how the California Poppy's glowing gifts deeply permeated and rooted into the hearts and culture of California; and the wonderful story of the work of a self-taught pioneer woman botanist of the 1870s-1900s whose determined efforts elevated the poppy to the State Flower of California in 1903. 1550 Wildcat Canyon Rd. Richard will share their amazing stories and the poppy's own journey. The bees and the poppy evolved hand-in-hand and the art and culture of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries often focused on that relationship, as the people who lived so close to the land were keen observers. Richard will share many of these pieces and stories which reveal how the California poppy has mesmerized the people of California throughout time like no other flower ever has. Pioneer Botanist and Oakland Resident Sarah Lemmon's determined many-year effort to get the California poppy named the official California State Flower finally paid off in 1903. Richard will tell her story. Biography: Richard Schwartz is a historian and the author of Eccentrics, Heroes, and Cutthroats of Old Berkeley; Earthquake Exodus, 1906; Berkeley 1900; and The Circle of Stones. Originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he graduated from Temple University with a bachelor’s degree in English Literature. An outdoor enthusiast and animal lover, Schwartz worked on a Pennsylvania Dutch farm for two years before heading west to find higher mountains. He fought forest fires for the US Forest Service in Tahoe National Forest. He now lives in Berkeley, California, where he worked as a building contractor and now documents early Native American sites in the Bay Area. The Man Who Lit Lady Liberty (April 2017) is his fifth book and was selected by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Margaret Herrick Library to be included in their special collection. Artist Advocates include diverse artists, culture bearers, and creative workers with a dedicated and committed artistic or cultural practice who directly engage in advocacy and policy development to advance the holistic well-being of the field. Each artist advocate will identify a change they want to make happen and be supported to develop an advocacy plan to enact that change. GAAP awards a cohort of five artist advocates $12,000 each to participate in a nine-month curriculum that will launch in November 2024. The stipend is not a grant. The cohort members will dedicate 25 hours per month to attend in-person and Zoom meetings of the learning community and work on their advocacy plans. ?? We will compose poems in response to the artwork in this year’s Celebration of the Arts show. Using various prompts and techniques, we will explore new ways of seeing with our words.
