DEC. 9 - 2:00 pm matinee - Marin Country Mart, 2257 Larkspur Landing Circle, Larkspur.http://www.marincountrymart.com/calendar I am so excited about these upcoming Jim Kweskin Quartet shows ¡ªit is a great joy to make music with Jim Kweskin and Meredith Axelrod. Way back in January 1973 (at age 18) I saw Jim Kweskin, playing solo, and that experience changed my life. To get to play in his band now is a dream come true for me. Meredith Axelrod is a brilliant singer and instrumentalist - she plays every instrument, it seems, with panache and in a completely unique yet un-self-conscious way - she sings like it¡¯s 1912 - and I love her wacky sense of humor as well as her devotion to her craft. Our music will be anchored by upright bassist Matt Berlin, from Boston. Advance tickets are recommended for the Thurs. night show at the Back Room and the Saturday afternoon show in Soquel. Please tell your Santa Cruz friends about the Michael¡¯s-on-Main (Soquel) show! Thanks, Suzy Copyright ? 2018 Eric and Suzy Thompson, All rights reserved. Those Women Producctions: Unquestioned Integrity: The Hill-Thomas Hearings, 12-11-18
Unquestioned Integrity: the Hill-Thomas Hearings By Mame Hunt Directed by Erin Merritt When: 8 pm December 11, 2018 Where: The Live Oak Theater, 1301 Shattuck Avenue, Berkeley Those Women Productions presents a staged reading of Unquestioned Integrity: an electrifying docudrama drawn from the testimony given by Anita Hill and Clarence Thomas before the Senate Judiciary Committee in 1991. "When the Me Too movement began last year, some of my friends asked if I was going to write another play, but I decided not to. I did decide, though, that I would revise the ending of the play in a very brief and oblique way. After the Kavanaugh nightmare, friends again asked me if I was going to write another play about these hearings. Sadly, much of the play I wrote in '92 was echoed in the Kavanaugh hearing. Both men lied. Both expressed themselves with uncanny rage. Both women were dignified, articulate and credible. In both cases, the corroborating witnesses were prevented from testifying. Deja vu, I suppose." ~ Mame Hunt The cast includes Velina Brown* as Anita Hill, Dorian Lockett* as Clarence Thomas, and Gene Thompson* as "The Senator." *Member, Actors' Equity Association Get Tickets/Reserve Seats (everyone welcome regardless of ability to pay) About the playwright: Mame Hunt has been a dramaturg specializing in New Play Development for over 30 years and has worked with such organizations as the Sundance Theatre Program, Intiman Theatre, Magic Theatre (Artistic Director 1993-98), Bay Area Playwrights Festival (Artistic Director 1991-97), Berkeley Rep, Los Angeles Theatre Center, and many others. She has worked with some of the finest playwrights in the country, including Nilo Cruz, Marlane Meyer, Roger Guenveur Smith, Darrah Cloud, Julie Hebert, Mallery Avidon and Jose Rivera. About the director: Erin Merritt is an award-winning theater maker who specializes in political and female-forward work. She made her mark as the founding Artistic Director of the Bay Area¡¯s all-female Shakespeare company, Woman¡¯s Will (1998 ¨C 2011), where she directed 13 productions, including two ¡°Top Ten Shows of the Year.¡± She now focuses on new work¡ªrecently directing premieres by Joan Holden, Susan-Jane Harrison, Toni Press-Coffman, and Aditi Brennan Kapil. She also produced the 2013 and 2014 Bay Area Playwrights Festivals and the 2017 and 2018 TBA Awards, and is proud to be part of the consortium putting together the 2020 Women¡¯s Theatre Festival, Bay Area. erinmerritt.com. About Velina Brown [Anita Hill]: Velina is an award winning actress, singer/songwriter, and director whose artistic home for over 20 years has been the San Francisco Mime Troupe. IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE: Film Person? shared office space 12x10ish in west Berkeley ($260/mo+internet)
From: "verna_lim" <verna.lim@...> Date: December 4, 2018 at 5:04:17 PM PST Subject: [brex] IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE: shared office space 12x10ish in west Berkeley ($260/mo+internet) Hi All: Lovely, well-lit, 12x10ish space in the converted old Berkeley Clock Factory --all windows along one wall, and clerestory windows along the other wall. You'd be sharing with me through at least February, (I'm there 3-4 days a week usually 9-6p, occasionally with my 2 small, quiet, adorable dogs). Rent is $260 (+ $11 or so for internet). There's a large desk, small bookshelf, and slipper chair already there which you can use, if desired. (or we can remove it). Will need first and last month rent and $200 deposit = $720 to move-in. Space is great for a consultant, a writer, artist or digital musician. The last subletter was a multi-media digital music and visual artist who used it for his evening work. We overlapped by a half hour in the early evening, perfect for exchanging art inspiration. Daytime use is welcome too, of course. I'm a producer, editor, story designer for Field Station Media -- so about 80% of the time I'm editing quietly with headphones, and 20% of the time on video conference production meetings. For my bad back, I take short yoga breaks with my mat in the corner. The main tenant (Regan Brashear) is flexible about how long you could sublet for, but looking for a commitment of at least 6 months, ideally one year. There are about 8 other friendly, awesome filmmakers and other creatives who are on the same floor. We all share a kitchenette and an outdoor patio space with a picnic table. Downstairs there are even more filmmakers and creative types. It's really a great dynamic place to work! Note on access: There is one set of stairs to get to the office and no elevator. You can email or call me with questions: 510-684-0884. Warmly, Verna Lim Creative Director / Producer / Editor Field Station Media verna@... Richmond Art Center's Winter Exhibitions
The Richmond Art Center will present three new exhibitions, opening January 15, 2019. Announcing Richmond Art Center's Winter Exhibitions View this email in your browser Announcing Richmond Art Center's Winter Exhibitions [Richmond, CA] ¨C December 12, 2018 ¨C The Richmond Art Center will present three new exhibitions, opening January 15, 2019: The 23rd Annual Art of Living Black, Place as Landscape/Place as Concept: Contemporary Enameling in the U.S., and Empowering Threads: Quilts from the Social Justice Sewing Academy. -- The 23rd Annual Art of Living Black Main and West Galleries Exhibition Dates: January 15 - March 8, 2019 Reception: Saturday, February 2, 2:00 - 5:00 pm As the longest running event of its kind in the Bay Area to feature artists of African descent, The 23rd Annual Art of Living Black will present an exhibition at the Richmond Art Center, as well as Open Studios and Satellite Exhibitions at locations across the Bay Area. The Art of Living Black was founded in 1997 by the late sculptor Jan Hart-Schuyers and the late painter Rae Louise Hayward after their realization that black artists were not being represented by galleries in any significant way. As Hart-Schuyers said at the time, ¡°We¡¯re just a group of artists that share the same dream. We¡¯ve decided to do something about it.¡± And they did. Since its founding 23 years ago, The Art of Living Black has featured hundreds of emerging and established artists; showcasing their work, introducing them to new patrons and audiences, and building a creative community of artists and art lovers. Image: Rae Louise Hayward, Three Women, date unknown -- Place as Landscape/Place as Concept: Contemporary Enameling in the U.S. South Gallery Exhibition Dates: January 15 - March 8, 2019 Reception: Saturday, February 2, 2:00 - 5:00 pm Featuring work by both established and emerging enamelists, Place as Landscape/Place as Concept brings together enamel arts that explore place and landscape from an American perspective. In the United States, where the sheer size of the country has created an incredible diversity of landscape, concepts of place are intimately connected to identity and culture. The works in this exhibition use a range of traditional and experimental enameling techniques to explore place not just as scenery but as as a way of understanding who we are. This exhibition expands upon the American showcase presented at BLAZE: International Contemporary Enamel Exhibition at the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute in Taipei (2017-2018). Featured Artists: Ken Bova, Harlan Butt, Katy Cassell, Kat Cole, Helen Elliott, Danielle Embry, Greg Flint, Kristina Glick, Gretchen Goss, Janly Jaggard, Sarah Loch-Test, Sharon Massey, Cynthia Miller, Pat Musick, Gail Reid, Rene Roberts, Averill Shepps, Jan Smith, Judy Stone, Don Viehman, Carly Wright Image: Katy Cassell, Lost Sea, 2016 -- Empowering Threads: Quilts from the Social Justice Sewing Academy Community Gallery Exhibition Dates: January 15 - March 8, 2019 Reception: Saturday, February 2, 2019, 2:00 - 5:00 pm In August 2018 the Richmond Art Center and Social Justice Sewing Academy (SJSA) partnered to run a workshop at the Latina Center in Richmond, CA. Women from the Latina Center¡¯s leadership program came together to learn how to visualize social justice issues to design fabric squares that express ideas relevant to themselves and their community. The multiple squares were then embroidered, pieced and sewn together to create a quilt that amplifies the impact and energy of the individual messages within it. Empowering Threads brings together recent SJSA quilts made in workshops held across America, including quilts by women at the Latina Center and youth from Richmond High School. Featured Artists and Community Groups: Cambridge School of Weston, Carina Cabriales, Mailan Carr, Chloe Gorski, The Latina Center, Laura Madriz, Yaneli Martinez, Bryan Robinson, Alonso Saenz, Juan Tapia, Yosief Teckle, Alysia Thach, Jamia Williams Image: Laura Madriz, My Blood is in the Soil, 2016 # # # About the Richmond Art Center: The Richmond Art Center is the largest visual arts center in the East Bay, delivering exciting arts experiences to young and old alike who reflect the diverse richness of our community. Every year, the Richmond Art Center serves thousands of students through classes and programs taught by professional artists, both onsite at the Art Center and at sites throughout Richmond.
