The Berkeley Community Chorus & Orchestra (BCCO) is excited to announce the program for its Spring 2025 Concert Series, Friday May 30¡ªSunday June 1:
St. John of Damascus, by Sergei Taneyev
Requiem, by Camille Saint-Sa?ns
Performances take place at Hertz Hall on the UC Berkeley campus.
Friday, May 30 (at 7:30 pm)
Saturday, May 31 (at 3 pm) and
Sunday, June 1 (at 3 pm)
The concerts are free. Donations in support of these concerts are gratefully accepted.
Maestro Ming Luke leads the chorus, full orchestra, and four soloists who join the nearly 60-year-old chorus in this rare performance.
Ellen Leslie, soprano
Sara Couden, contralto
Brian Thorsett, tenor
Simon Barrad, baritone
"For our spring 2025 concert series, the Berkeley Community Chorus & Orchestra (BCCO) explores two brilliant but lesser-known works of compositional genius, Sergei Taneyev's St. John of Damascus and Camille Saint-Sa?ns' Requiem. St. John of Damascus was Taneyev's
first published work; it immediately placed him in the upper echelons of composers during his day," says Maestro Luke.
Saint-Sa?ns, known mostly for his orchestral works, wrote the Requiem to honor his great friend and benefactor, Albert Libon.
Saint-Sa?ns' biographer, Jacques Bonnaure, noted in his 2010 book: "This unjustly neglected Requiem is perhaps the most sensitive, imaginative, and perfect work by the composer, who finds here, more than ever before, a classical balance between form and expression,
innovation and tradition, sophisticated compositional style and immediate effect."
"Both works deserve to be performed more often, and it's a treat for BCCO to explore these significant works," says Ming.

New Cube Space Exhibition! |
|
In our 2025 exhibition series, curated by William Hernandez Luege, we present (b. 1991, Albuquerque, NM) a Bay Area artist whose practice of working with adobe is inherited from her family as well as the enjarradoras and adoberas, women who specialize in the traditional craft of earthen architecture.
In The Architectural Veil, a ³¾²¹²õ³ó°ù²¹²ú¾±²â¡¯²â²¹, a traditional North African and Middle Eastern ornamental screen, is transformed into a sculpture, asking the viewer how materials containing cultural memory inhabit and shape our understanding of belonging and separation. This exhibit opens a space for reflection, urging us to consider how the built world, both industrial and handcrafted, is never a given but always the result of long processes of migration, adaptation, and transformation.
Follow the artist on .
The Architectural Veil is on display at the Cube Space through June 2025.
The City of Berkeley¡¯s is a 200 sq. ft. contemporary art gallery located in the heart of downtown Berkeley at 2010 Addison Street. Unlike a traditional exhibition space, curated art displays are viewable 24/7 through surrounding store-front glass walls. Established in 2019, the Cube Space features a rotating series of three-month long exhibitions by emerging and mid-career Bay Area artists.

Meet
Dora La Flora Czifra
Bay Area Book Festival Deputy Director of Programs
|
|
|
How would you describe what you do as Deputy Director of Programs?
I collect visions of our programming from stakeholders and help translate them into physical reality for others to enjoy. This means I interact with our Executive Director, leadership team, Literary Advisory Committee, publicists, authors, the public, and collate the information of what they want to see, and what we can realistically create. Then our small-but-mighty team works together until the collective visions are tangible and ready for our main stakeholder¡ªthe audience. That¡¯s the big, lofty picture. The daily down-to-earth reality is that I answer emails, geek out in spreadsheets, meet with amazing people, and review books.
What are you most looking forward to with the festival programming
this year?
We have many timely and important programs that deal with our current political moment throughout our two-day festival, but also equally as many for those who want a weekend of escapism from that reality. That's the beauty of books, right? They are here for us no matter what we need. On Saturday, I am excited about Family Day at the library with readings and discussions for all ages, and our eight writers¡¯ workshops at the Marsh in Berkeley for those looking to hone their skills or find community. Sunday will feature gems on all of our stages, but I have an affinity for the programs in the Brower Center Tamalpais room, with a double dose of mystery, some nonfiction around tech, a panel of graphic novels, and some cool new horror! If on the other hand I felt like exercising my political muscles, I would be at the Freight for discussions around how to unionize, decolonize wealth, and reimagine our carceral systems. Check out the schedule¡ªto be honest I am excited about all of it!?
What does "changing the narrative" mean to you personally?
In many ways, the concept of changing the narrative for me is about identity (collective and individual) and the opportunity to heal through reexamining how we process and tell our stories. Through storytelling, we have the power to create (and re-create) the self, the collective, and the future. I am inspired by concepts such as Anthony Giddens¡¯ ideas around the self as a reflexive project and the real opportunity for healing in actively working with shaping our stories. Whether alone through therapy and journaling, or as a collective through dialogues, speaker series, anthologies, summits, and democratic law and policy making, change happens through the storytelling of who we are, and who we want to be. I think what we need right now is not only a thorough understanding of how we got here but also extensive intentional dialogue to see how we can find a collective identity and way forward that is more inclusive and uplifting for everyone who calls this country and planet their home.

What does it mean to exist at this moment in time and history? How might we come together to create meaning and be in community with one another during sometimes strange, disorienting times? How is the role of the written and spoken word changing in our current moment??
What different books and ways of envisioning the world are people imagining and bringing to life these days??We encourage you to sit with these questions and bring them (and others) with you to the festival.
Join us May 31¨CJune 1 at the Bay Area Book Festival, and until then, don¡¯t be a stranger. We can¡¯t wait to see you soon.

We limit each summer camp session to 12-15 students so that each student receives individual attention. Making art develops problem-solving skills, encourages creativity, and develops self-confidence. Our goal is to provide the?materials,?structure, and guidance?to spark creativity in each child, allow them to explore and investigate their own ideas, and have lots of fun in the process. Our philosophy is to encourage students to explore and express themselves, emphasizing practice over product, without judgment, comparison, or criticism.
Each camp day has plenty of structure and practice, and we have lots of fun in the process. I love to work with each student, one-on-one, to see what their unique interests are!?We demonstrate a variety of methods and ways of making art to nurture artistic development. We also provide lessons on color theory, and famous artists in art?history,?and host special guests to spark the creative process. We wholeheartedly encourage individual exploration of personal themes and interests. And we value working together and sharing ideas. Collaboration, cooperation, and community are important!

Suzy & Eric, Back Room, Berkeley, Fri. Apr. 11
Friday, April 11 at 8 pm
Suzy & Eric Thompson with Mark Schatz
Mitch Greenhill & Mitch's Kitchen
The Back Room
1984 Bonita (off of University), Berkeley
Help us celebrate the release of Suzy's new album, "Suzy Sings Siebel"!? We'll play songs from this tribute to songwriter Paul Siebel, plus blues, old-time and Cajun music - and if we're lucky, Mark Schatz will do some flatfooting too!? Mitch Greenhill & Mitch's Kitchen play the first set at 8 pm; Suzy, Eric and Mark will play at around 9.? All ages welcome.? The Back Room is a smallish venue so advance tickets are recommended, available here:?
is a major departure from Suzy's other recordings; it features ten songs by Paul Siebel.? You probably have heard his best-loved song, "Louise", and that's on the new album with beautiful backup from Cindy Cashdollar (dobro), John Sebastian (harmonica) and Molly Mason (bass.) Paul Siebel's songs were the soundtrack of my early 20's, and of Eric's and my courtship. They have been with me for 50 years and I am so very glad to have this opportunity to share these gems of songcraft.??
We'll have CDs available at the Back Room.? If you prefer a digital download, or can't make it to the Back Room, you can order your copy here:?
Here's what people are saying about "Suzy Sings Siebel":
¡°Suzy has performed a conjuring trick, making the songs her own while conveying the essence of the originals so well that Paul Siebel¡¯s musicality is present along with Suzy¡¯s. The art is in service of the song; herein lies treasure.¡± -Jody Stecher, producer of Suzy Sings Siebel
¡°Suzy has created a loving, heartwarming tribute to Paul, one of our most overlooked singer-songwriters. She¡¯s done him proud, setting each jewel of a song in a warm, intimate setting, with her sweet voice, great playing and gentle arrangements.¡± - Bonnie Raitt
¡°Suzy has interpreted Paul¡¯s songs with grace and brilliance, sung them exquisitely, and created big, gorgeous, laid-back instrumental tracks that perfectly complement her voice. Paul encouraged this project, and he would have loved it.¡± - Peter K. Siegel, producer of Paul Siebel¡¯s debut album, Woodsmoke and Oranges
¡°Suzy Thompson sings these songs with the same vibrancy and depth of understanding she brings to blues or Cajun or ballads or old swing tunes. Paul connected with Suzy after hearing her do a concert of his songs, not long before his death. I can only think he died much happier for hearing her renditions of his songs. I can't think of a songwriter who wouldn't feel the same; I know I would.¡± - Mark Simos, songwriting department, Berklee College of Music
Other Eric & Suzy shows coming up:
Sun. April 27 at 5 pm (note early start time) - Cajun dance with the Aux Cajunals at Rancho Nicasio in scenic central Marin County
Wed. April 30 - from 6 to 8:30 (note early start time)? ?CD release?concert celebrating "Suzy Sings Siebel" with Suzy & Eric Thompson and Mark Schatz, Hopmonk Sebastopol. We'll play 2 full sets at this show.?This show is brought to you by Kevin Russell and won't be listed on the Hopmonk's website.? FREE admission, tips greatly appreciated!? Dinner menu available.? Hopmonk Sebastopol is located at 230 Petaluma Ave,?Sebastopol
Many thanks to all of you who have already ordered "Suzy Sings Siebel"!!? We hope to see you at one of our upcoming shows.

Mary W.D. Graham will be activating Value Test: Brown Paper through a live performance of two monologues, embodying the subjects depicted within the paintings.?The performance draws upon the fictitious nature of the portraits in Value Test, almost all of which were rendered using photo collage as reference as opposed to a single model. The result is the creation of singular characters, each of whom embody the oral history and storytelling present within discussions of colorism within Black communities.

Mel Vapour, East Bay Media Center, co-director
?
Death Notice: Mel Vapour, East Bay Media Center,
co-director
?
First published by Berkeley Times on Thursday, March 13, 2025
Mel Vapour, longtime co-director of the East Bay Media Center and
co-founder of the Berkeley Video & Film Festival, died on Monday, March 10
after a sudden illness.
According to Paul Kealoha-Blake, his longtime artistic and business
associate, Vapour¡¯s final decline began last Friday with a sense of disease. On
Sunday, he sought medical treatment and was transported to Alta Bates. On
Monday, he died in hospice care. He was 78.
Vapour was a multi-talented visual artist. Though almost every
filmmaker in the Bay Area (dating back for decades) knew him as a master and
maven of film/video production, his artistic career began in print and poster making
dating back to his high school days in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
He was known for his experimental techniques and for his
eye-popping designs. In the early 1970s, he won a fellowship to study
printmaking in Germany at a studio closely associated with Albrecht Durer, one
of his heroes. But when he showed up with long hair, which was fashionable at
the time, and his prickly personality, the collaboration did not last.
Vapour was a rebel at heart, always a champion for the underdog,
and a nurturer of emerging talents ¨C including this publication in its earliest
days. According to Kealoha-Blake, a memorial service for his longtime associate
is in the works. Look for the details in an upcoming edition of Berkeley
Times. R. Todd Kerr BERKELEY TIMES A paper for the people of Berkeley P.O. Box 559, Berkeley, CA? 94701-0559 tel 510 332 7572
