CA for the Arts: ACTION ALERT: Your advocacy needed, Federal & State updates

ARTS ACTION ALERT
FEDERAL BUDGET NEWS:
from

For a third-straight year, the Trump administration has proposed to eliminate the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), and the Corporation of Public Broadcasting (CPB).?As misdirected as this proposal is, we are confident that Congress¡ªas it has done in the past two fiscal years¡ªwill again reject this short-sighted budget request in a bipartisan, bicameral manner, and increase funding for the Endowments.?

Will you??today to urge them to reject the president's proposal???

Congress not only dismissed these initial?calls for termination, but in fact gave steady increases in funding to several cultural agencies.?Check out a brief history of budgetary proposals and final funding for these agencies for the past three years below:
?
Saving the cultural agencies happened because?thousands of arts advocates made their voices heard on Capitol Hill.??Use??to take a few minutes to contact your member of Congress now!?Also, be sure to check out Americans for the Arts President and CEO Robert L. Lynch's??regarding the president's budget proposal.
?

Richmond Art Center's Spring Exhibitions

Announcing Richmond Art Center's Spring Exhibitions
[Richmond, CA] ¨C March 5, 2019 ¨C The Richmond Art Center will present five new exhibitions: Here is the Sea, Faces Without Noses, 54th Annual WCCUSD Student Art Show, Siempre Estar¨¦ A Tu Lado (I¡¯ll always be by your side), and Richmond Creates: The 7th Annual Art in the Community Show.
--

Main Gallery
Exhibition Dates: March 26 - May 17, 2019
Reception: Saturday, March 23, 5:00 -7:00 pm
Here is the Sea brings together artworks that use the ocean and its coasts as a site for investigating the fraught relationship between humans and nature. Richmond is a city with thirty-two miles of shoreline, and through this exhibition visitors to the Richmond Art Center are invited to reflect on what is at stake and what has already been lost in our local maritime environment. The exhibition will present a range of environmental work, from political pieces with critical messages for social action, to works exploring more subtle, personal impulses that shape our relationship to water.
Works by Stephen Bruce, Christy Chan, Tanja Geis, Richard Lang and Judith Selby Lang, Love the Bulb - Bulbfest Performers, Jos Sances, and Dimitra Skandali emphasize local maritime environments, such as the Richmond mudflats, the former San Pablo whaling station, Point Reyes'?coast line and the pacific ocean. Through raising awareness of ecological problems in relation to local maritime environments, Here is the Sea will highlight the connections between?local and global events.

South Gallery
Exhibition Dates: March 26 - May 17, 2019
Reception: Saturday, March 23, 5:00 - 7:00 pm
For over fifty years, Emeryville artist M. Louise Stanley¡¯²õ large scale paintings have roamed across themes of classical myths, feminism, art history, travel and current politics. An anchor for Stanley¡¯²õ formidable creative output is her sketchbooks. As she says, ¡°Sketchbooks are a major part of my process, they define my compulsions!¡± Faces Without Noses presents a survey of Stanley¡¯²õ sketchbooks, capturing the skill of her draftsmanship and including her most quintessential subjects. The sketchbooks are accompanied by a selection of Stanley¡¯²õ paintings demonstrating the development of her ideas from sketchbook to canvas.

In George Eliot¡¯²õ Romola, Eliot describes an old Florentine collector during the Italian Renaissance who purchased many "disinterred busts of ancient immortals - some perhaps, truncis naribus; wanting as to the nose, but not the less authentic.¡± As a title for this exhibition truncis naribus, translated from Latin to Faces Without Noses, represents overarching questions of authenticity and authorship that thread themselves through Stanley¡¯²õ work. What is Stanley¡¯²õ relationship with dead artists whose work she obsessively studies, translates and even copies? How do her sketchbooks work to capture great ideas from art history while at the same time launch new ones?

Jennifer Lugris' paintings explore identity in terms of fault lines, fissures and pressure points. Lugris grew up in a house where asado was eaten with kimchi, and where dinner conversations seamlessly shifted from English to Spanish to Korean. As a first-generation American, born of immigrants with roots in North Korea, South Korea, Argentina, Spain and Uruguay, Lugris has a tremendous appreciation for the opportunities she has seized. She expresses this through paintings that capture moments, people and things from her life she does not want to take for granted.

Lugris' solo exhibition, Siempre Estar¨¦ A Tu Lado (I¡¯ll always be by your side), will include a new series of portraits of herself, her husband and a placeholder work for her soon to-be-born daughter. These intensely fractured multi-panel portraits represent personal reflections on her growing family, the challenges of establishing new identities, and the possibilities for interconnectedness.??

About the Richmond Art Center: The Richmond Art Center is the largest visual arts center in the East Bay, delivering exciting arts experiences to young and old alike who reflect the diverse richness of our community. The Art Center features hands-on learning, well-equipped studios, Art in the Community programs and contemporary exhibitions in its galleries.
Every year, the Richmond Art Center serves thousands of students through classes and programs taught by professional artists, both onsite at the Art Center and at sites throughout Richmond. The Art Center¡¯²õ four galleries mount rotating exhibitions that display the works of emerging and established Bay Area artists. Artists such as Richard Diebenkorn, Richard Misrach, Wanxin Zhang, Mildred Howard, Bella Feldman, Hung Liu, William Wiley, June Schwartz, and David Park have been showcased here.
The Richmond Art Center originated in 1936, when local artist Hazel Salmi, who worked for the WPA, traversed the streets of Richmond with a suitcase packed with art supplies, eager to teach art to anyone interested. Today, everything at the Art Center continues to breathe life into Salmi¡¯²õ original vision: That within every person lives an artist.
