New Cube Space Exhibition! |
|
In our 2025 exhibition series, curated by curated by William Hernandez Luege, we present (Bolivia, 1988) an artist based in the East Bay who makes work in collaboration with the public, often asking for help in defining, circulating, or discovering their work.
In Rock Paper Scissors, Farthing-Kohl presents a world where perception is turned upside down. Set on curved bleachers¡ªstructures that recall ancient amphitheaters, modern stadiums, and other theatrical seating¡ªthis installation presents sculptures made from decaying industrial materials like concrete, asphalt, and metal. Their surfaces are printed with images of devices like coin-operated viewers, televisions, globes, microscopes, and other devices used to frame, magnify, and control our view of the world. Here, those tools of vision seem to watch us back. Seated on bleachers, these sculptures stare at us, turning this space into a theater, not unlike those on the nearby street.
Follow the artist on .
Rock Paper Scissor is on display at the Cube Space through March 2025.
The City of Berkeley¡¯s Cube Space is a 200 sq. ft. contemporary art gallery located in the heart of downtown Berkeley at 2010 Addison Street. Unlike a traditional exhibition space, curated art displays are viewable 24/7 through surrounding store-front glass walls. Established in 2019, the Cube Space features a rotating series of three-month long exhibitions by emerging and mid-career Bay Area artists.

Daughters of the Delta with CHELLE! & Friends |
|
| Inspired by?Michelle Jacques¡¯ deep love and admiration for the rich folklore of her birthplace, Louisiana,?Daughters of the Delta?is a compelling project that delves into the often overlooked and underappreciated contributions of women to the unique musical heritage of the Louisiana Gulf region. From the groundbreaking jazz of Lil Hardin Armstrong to the soulful blues of Blue Lou Barker and the powerful gospel of Mahalia Jackson,?Daughters of the Delta?pays tribute to the pivotal role women have played in shaping Louisiana¡¯s musical culture, a living tradition that remains one of the most richly layered and vibrant in the United States. The voices and stories of these extraordinary women?weave a narrative that celebrates their artistic achievements and preserves the collective memory of enduring hardships like hurricanes, poverty, and hunger, while embracing the vibrant celebrations of community life. Daughters of the Delta?illuminates the profound impact of women on the musical soundscape of Louisiana, honoring their legacy, and ensuring that their contributions continue to inspire and resonate with future generations. ¡°Michelle Jacques brings her velvety, hypnotic sound to the songs?she¡¯s curated for Daughters of the Delta. She sings in English, Creole or Kouri-Vini so we can actually hold space for both the haunting history these women composers and singers experienced as well as the ways they still managed to create joy.¡± ¨C?Rachel Medanic, Producer Agile Vocalist podcastDaughters of the Delta is performed by CHELLE! & Friends with special guest vocalists: Vocals: Michelle Jacques Vocal: Rhonda Crane Vocals: Bryan Dyer Guitar: Eric Swinderman Alto Sax: Donna Viscuso Drums: Michaelle Goerlitz Bass: Kevin Scott Vocals: Tammi Brown Vocals: Jay Lamont Saturday, March 1st | 7pm Rhythmix Cultural Works 2513 Blanding Ave,?Alameda

Bonnie Randall Boller: A Celebration of the Artist and Her Work | Thursday, February 6th @ 6-8pm at Rhythmix in Alameda
Bonnie Randall Boller: A Celebration of the Artist and Her Work |
|
| Bonnie Boller was a visionary Alameda-based artist whose creative journey spanned over 40 years, weaving together the realms of?encaustic painting, pottery, printmaking, and mixed media. Her artistic philosophy was simple yet profound: ¡°Art is about the process, more than the finished product.¡± Throughout her career, Bonnie¡¯s work evolved, shifting from the tactile world of ceramics to the more delicate, pictorial expressions found in printmaking, clay monotype, encaustic painting, and encaustic monoprints. Boller¡¯s work was defined by a unique, almost intimate, perspective and?ability to capture the world?as if viewed through a magnifying glass. This intimate gaze, coupled with a masterful use of color and simplicity of form, created compositions that were both striking and evocative. The complexity of her pieces was woven with a quiet allure, offering a depth that invited viewers to look beyond the surface. Opening Reception: Thursday, February 6th | 6pm

Flight Lessons | Saturday, February 8th @ 7:00pm at Rhythmix in Alameda
| ?Urban?Wildlife Folk Opera by Deborah Crooks Flight Lessons, a folk opera by Deborah Crooks, is?inspired by the true story?of Peregrine Falcons and their coexistence with humans at Oakland¡¯s Fruitvale Bridge. It explores themes of home, migration, adaptation, and the limits of the man-made environment. The narrative follows an urban wildlife biologist monitoring a breeding pair of Peregrine Falcons on the bridge, highlighting how their lives intersect with the local community after one of the birds is shot. The opera reflects on life, loss, nature, and humanity, asking how we can better value the wild in urban spaces and how one recovers after loss. "Flight Lessons" prompts us to consider our relationship with nature, resilience, and the deep connections between humans and wildlife. Saturday, February?8th?| 7pm
