Dear Friends,
What an exciting time to be an arts advocate in California! Over the last 2 months we¡¯ve been touring the state and meeting with arts leaders to discuss what the state of arts advocacy is in California. We can tell you it is strong and we are feeling so optimistic and energized to lead the statewide movement. It was only 5 years ago that funding was at historic lows, hovering around $1 million for 10 years. In the last 5 years we¡¯ve seen over 800% growth in the state budget for the arts and although this is a tremendous increase we are still not where we need to be to see arts accessible for every Californian.
With our new Governor showing early support for public funding for the arts, it¡¯s our job to continue to press our representatives to increase permanent funding and to value arts, culture and creativity as transformational, impactful and just as worthy as any other social service providing solutions to our communities.
Just recently, Executive Director Julie Baker?ran into Governor Newsom on a Southwest flight from LA to Sacramento. She had the opportunity to introduce herself and thank him for the $10 million in permanent funding for the California Arts Council he has allocated in his first budget. Gov. Newsom smiled and said, "But we still need to do more." Stunned and smiling in agreement, he continued to encourage Ms. Baker, "Keep lobbying me, it works."?
At that point, she had to thank the Governor for validating her job, but in all seriousness, Gov. Newsom has opened the door and invited us to come in and build our case. So now it is up to all of us to show up, to advocate, to go from arts supporters to arts activists and build California as the leading state of creativity. In listening to his State of the State address there was no mention of the creativity economy so we need to make sure our voices are heard.
?How can you help? for in Sacramento on April 23 where we will connect, educate and mobilize our efforts. Can¡¯t make it to the Capitol that day? Join us throughout the month of April by , or host an event in?your own community and download our guide.
We want to hear your . How has access to public funding helped an arts program, artist or organization to make a difference in your community? How can the arts create a meaningful outcome on some of our state¡¯s most pressing issues?

We¡¯ve always been told when you need to solve a problem, think outside the box and come up with a creative solution. Artists and cultural workers have always done just that. Now is our time to have a seat at the table and to be recognized for our contributions. As Shirley Chisholm said, ¡°If they don't give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.¡±

California Cultural Districts Launches Website and Coalition
|
|
Originating with the adoption of Assembly Bill 189 in 2015, authored by Assemblyman Richard Bloom, the California Cultural Districts program aims to leverage the state¡¯s artistic and cultural assets.?
In July of 2017, 14 pilot districts were designated. Led by Peter Comiskey of the Balboa Park Cultural District, the focus of the Coalition is to unify California¡¯s Cultural Districts?to advance advocacy and collaboration in arts and culture.?

San Jose Jazz and CFTA member Brendan Rawson, pictured right, has written several including recently in the ?and a piece in the from 12/31 about California taking the lead in many areas including Cultural Diplomacy. We love this idea!
?"Develop a strategy of cultural diplomacy, to include: a cultural ambassadors program sending exceptional California artists such as former U.S. Poet Laureate Kay Ryan, musician Herbie Hancock (already a U.N. cultural ambassador), or California immigrant Gustavo Dudamel to important international gatherings; a cultural exchange program that sends California artists abroad and brings foreign artists here, particularly those from countries that the president has denigrated; and a program to assist California sites in securing?Membership in?UNESCO World Heritage status. Potential sites could include Manzanar, Angel Island and Monterey Bay."

Paul learned the blues from the original black masters performing nightly in his own back yard. Muddy Waters was Paul's mentor and lifelong friend, happy to share his wisdom and expertise with such a gifted young acolyte.
The interracial Paul Butterfield Blues Band, featuring the twin guitar sound of Michael Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop, the rhythm section of Sam Lay and Jerome Arnold and the keyboards of Mark Naftalin, added a rock edge to the Chicago blues, bringing an authenticity to its sound that struck a chord with the vast white rock audience and rejuvenated worldwide interest in the blues. The band's first LP, released in 1965, was named "#11 Blues Album of All Time" by Downbeat.
Through his music and words, along with first©\hand accounts of his family, his band mates and those closest to him, Horn From The Heart: The Paul Butterfield Story tells the complex story of a man many call the greatest blues harmonica player of all time.
The Paul Butterfield Blues Band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015. Paul Butterfield is one of a handful of musicians inducted into both the Rock and Roll and Blues Halls of Fame, alongside other legendary artists including B.B. King, Chuck Berry, Billie Holiday and Eric Clapton.

Fourth Street Fine Art is teaming up with I Made it Glass Creations to bring this ongoing series of glass workshops to Berkeley.?
In this beginning level glass fusing class, we will create a sense of depth using layers of glass. Students may bring in reference pictures, or work from their imagination creating a landscape on white sheet glass.? Very much the way an oil painter would add layers of paint we will add layers of colored glass. The BCT Steering Committee will provide an update from a recent meeting with City Manager Dee Ridley.
As a group, we will discuss our actions and advocacy in the coming months with City Council members. We need the group¡¯s time and support to keep advocating for the civic arts funding in the city¡¯s budget.?

Background:
CITY OF JOY, the film, directed by first-time director Madeleine Gavin, follows the first class of women at a revolutionary leadership center in eastern Congo called City of Joy, from which the film derives its title, and weaves their journey as burgeoning leaders with that of the center¡¯s founders (a devout Congolese doctor Dr. Denis Mukwege (2018 Nobel Peace Prize winner), women's rights activist Christine Schuler-Deschryver (Director of City of Joy and V-Day Congo) and radical feminist Eve Ensler (author of The Vagina Monologues and Founder of V-Day/One Billion Rising) - three individuals who imagined a place where women who have suffered horrific rape and abuse can heal and become powerful voices of change for their country.
Immediately following the screening, audience members will be invited to RISE and participate in the One Billion Rising ¡°Break the Chain¡± dance, as well as a Q&A with City Of Joy Co-Founders Christine Schuler Deschryver and Eve Ensler, moderated by She The People Founder Aimee Allison. ?
 The City of JoyConceived, owned, and run by local Congolese (and supported by V-Day), the has flourished since it first opened its doors in June 2011, healing women from their past trauma through therapy and life skills programming while providing them with the essential ingredients needed to move forward in life ¨C love and community. ¿ªÔÆÌåÓý 90 survivors of gender violence aged 18 to 30 at a time, 1,200 women leaders have graduated from the City of Joy. They are forces of energy and determination, entrepreneurs of small business, initiators of collectives, journalists, restaurants owners and farmers with new land, educators and advocates on sexual violence, volunteers in a self-created recruiting network for new women at COJ, immigration workers, tailors, students, herbalists, and more.
(BAR) is a network of feminist artists, spiritual leaders, and activists dedicated to ending violence against women and girls. We formed in 2012 in Oakland as a call to action from V-Day¡¯s One Billion Rising movement. Our performance rituals help communities heal from trauma and transform pain into power.
Proceeds go to local front-line organizations?like IDEX, 1000 Mothers to Prevent Violence, the American Indian Child Resource Center, Himalayan Sisterhood, the Radical Monarchs, and Black Lives Matter.
?is the biggest mass action to end violence against women (cisgender, transgender, and those who hold fluid identities that are subject to gender-based violence) in human history. The campaign, which launched on Valentine¡¯s Day 2012, began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. POETRY READING TO CELEBRATE TRANSCENDENT LOVE?
The ceremony is February 13, 2019, at ACCI Gallery
?
As part of its ongoing 60th anniversary celebration, and in conjunction with Valentine's Day, ACCI Gallery will hold a?poetry reading?on?Feb. 13, 2019.?The ceremony starts at 7:30 p.m. at ACCI (1652 Shattuck Ave. at Lincoln St.). Refreshments will be served at this free event.
The poet in the spotlight is Georgia-based?Lisa Anne Smartt,?a linguist and educator reading from her 2018 work?Veil: Poems from Across the Threshold.?She believes she channeled the poems in this volume from the spirit of her dead father, the poet Morton Felix.
Just weeks after he died, Smartt heard his voice asking that she transcribe poems meant for?Susan Felix,?his wife of of 54 years (and art ambassador to the City of Berkeley). Smartt didn't know whether she were truly hearing his spirit or merely imagining it, but she found the poems beautiful, so she collected them to honor his life and love.?
The poems reflect an expansive vision, as if from a perspective much greater than ours. Rafael Gonzalez, Berkeley's poet laureate, writes, "And whose poems are they? Lisa's? Her father Morton's from beyond the threshold? It matters not. What matters are the poems themselves, celebrations of life and of love, lyrical, tender and passionate ..."
In her work, Smartt has long focused on language and consciousness. In 2017 she published?Words at the Threshold,?in which she analyzed people's dying words, finding that when language is not literal or clear, it often reflects unusual and expanded perspectives. Her 2018 novel?Cante Bardo,?a tale of a flamenco singer making peace with the past before returning to Earth for a new life, also feels "channeled" from beyond.?
Phrases from poems in?Veil?will be on display at ACCI during the reading. Susan Felix chose the phrases and inscribed them into pit-fired ceramic plaques.

Actors Ensemble of Berkeley announces?auditions?for our staged reading of A Dybbuk or Between Two Worlds, an expressionistic drama based on the mystical concept from ?asidic Jewish folklore of the?, a disembodied human spirit that, because of former sins, wanders restlessly until it finds a haven in the body of a living person.
From 1912 until 1914, From S. Ansky (1863-1920), one of the most famous writers of Yiddish literature, conducted an ethnographic study of Jewish communities in Eastern Europe.? Ansky recorded stories, songs, rituals and superstitions, which later provided material for his own writing.? Like other Yiddish? writers Ansky wrote in both realistic and supernatural veins; the latter style a simplified version of Jewish mysticism, or Kabbalah.? Ansky had easy access to the basis of Kabbalistic literature, because the Jewish Chasidic movement of the late nineteenth century had already changed the incredibly complex stories of the Kabbalah to make them available to an uneducatedpublic.
Tony Kushner's adaptation of Ansky's A Dybbuk explores the themes of lust and desire, of worship and holiness, and corruption and sin.? A Dybbuk is a story of a shtetl romance, in which a young student, Chonen, falls in love with the daughter of the richest man in town, Leah.? Sender, Leah's father, will never accept the impoverished Chonen as a husband for his daughter.
Auditions?are?Sunday/Monday, February 10 &11 from?7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.?at Temple Beth Hillel in Richmond.? All races, ethnicities and genders are welcome.? Please bring paper copies of your headshot and?resume.? Please be prepared to read from sides. We will schedule folks?in 15 minute?blocks. If you wish to?audition?together we encourage you to sign up together.

We recognize these dates may not work for everyone - if this is true for you we may be able to make alternate arrangements - write us and find out.
