Persian New Year Festival, Booth Application, Tuesday, March 19, Berkeley

I would like to invite you to participate in the Persian New Year Festival with a booth.? Attached is the application. It is due back to me by Feb. 15 so if you are interested, please fill it out and mail it in with your payment ASAP.?

?

Here's some info about the festival:

?

Persian Center will be hosting its 20th Annual Chaharshanbeh Souri at the 2000 block of Durant Avenue in Berkeley:? Jump over bonfires on Tuesday, March 19, 2019, at Persian Center, 2029 Durant Avenue in Berkeley from 6-10 PM, to celebrate the change of seasons and welcome spring. A Persian ritual passed down since ancient Zoroastrian times, the Persian New Year Festival of Fire, called Chaharshanbeh Souri, (which means ¡®Eve of Wednesday¡±) is held on the last Tuesday night in winter, just before the Vernal Equinox or first moment of spring. This is the time of year when Persians around the world will be celebrating Nowruz (New Year).?

?

As the sun sets, people jump over bonfires to say farewell to the coldness, paleness, and sickness of winter, and welcome the redness, warmth and energy of spring; they sing, ¡°Zardi-ye man az toh, sorkhi-ye toh az man," which translates to, "May your rosy red glow be mine, and my sickly yellow pallor be yours." The tradition, rooted in Zoroastrianism (which predates Islam), serves as a cultural festival for Iranian and?Iranic?people and holds no religious significance.

?

Outside, in addition to the bonfires, there will be Persian music, food, arts & crafts booths for children, and stations for various cultural organizations.? Inside the Persian Center, there will be a traditional altar display called haftseen (seven ¡®s¡¯s), with seven items beginning with the letter ¡®s¡¯: sabzeh (barley/lentil sprouts) symbolizing rebirth, samanu (wheat germ pudding) symbolizing affluence, senjed (dried oleaster fruit) symbolizing love, seer (garlic) symbolizing heath, seeb (apple) symbolizing beauty, ²õ´Ç³¾¨¡±ç (sumac fruit) symbolizing sunrise, and serkeh (vinegar) symbolizing longevity & wisdom.? The display also includes a mirror, colored eggs, sweets, and candles.

?

By engaging the non-Persian community in the Festival of Fire, the organization hopes to allow a glimpse into beautiful Persian traditions and the culture of the Iranian-American community in the US.? The event which is hosted by the Persian Center is a free, family-friendly, non-alcoholic event held outdoors on the 2000 block of Durant Avenue, rain or shine.?

?

Persian Center, celebrating its 27th anniversary, is a non-profit, charitable 501(c3) organization whose mission is to create an environment in which to conduct social, cultural, educational, and recreational activities designed to strengthen the sense of identity and integrity of all Iranians and Iranian descendants, and to engage individuals interested in or related to Persian community and culture. ?It is one of a few secular Persian organizations in the United States.? For more information contact info@... or 510.334.6523.

?

Hope to see you jumping over the fires!

Veretski Pass is featured at Third Sunday's Concert on January 20th, St. Albans, 4PM

Third Sunday Concerts opens the 2019 series with the

Berkeley Klezmer Trio, Veretski Pass, in a CD Release Program:
The Magid Chronicles

Sunday, January 20, 2019, 4-6 pm

St. Alban's ?Episcopal Church, 1501 Washington Street, Albany 94706

Admission: ?General $25; Seniors/Students $20; ?Under 12 FREE

Veretski Pass presents a CD release concert of their 5th production, The Magid Chronicles, an instrumental collection based on ?pieces collected by Sofia Magid, the Jewish ethnographer who worked intensively to document Jewish music in Belarus and Ukraine during Stalin¡¯s regime in the 1920s and 30s. Magid¡¯s 600 recordings have been left untouched since they were created, and ?contain rare examples of women¡¯s songs and instrumental pieces. Next to the instrumentals and songs collected by Magid, we include music collected by Magid¡¯s Kiev counterpart, Moyshe Beregovski, among others, and music from Turkey, Greece and Rumania. ?And as always, we combine the archival with the creative impulse to achieve something new, with new compositions, arrangements and improvisations by the members of the trio. Sometimes raucous, sometimes meditative, this new program is a true melding of past, present and future.

In THE SKIN OF OUR TEETH, Thornton Wilder's 1943 Pulitzer-prize winning play, the Antrobus family stands in for all of humanity, as we move back and forth across time and space, humanity just barely escaping war, flood, and climate catastrophe.? In the midst of it all they meet both legends (Moses, Homer) and everyday folks, and shelter friend and fauna (a Dinosaur, a Woolly Mammoth).? Perhaps in the end, humanity will survive, thrive, and evolve to something more human.

Perhaps...

She Kills Monsters

She Kills Monsters, by Qui Nguyen, directed by Benjamin Grubb.
One night only, Monday, January 7th, 2019, 8 p.m. Live Oak Theatre

A comedic romp into the world of fantasy role-playing games, She Kills Monsters tells the story of Agnes Evans as she leaves her childhood home in Ohio following the death of her teenage sister, Tilly. When Agnes finds Tilly¡¯s Dungeons & Dragons notebook, however, she stumbles into a journey of discovery and action-packed adventure in the imaginary world that was Tilly¡¯s refuge. In this high-octane dramatic comedy laden with homicidal fairies, nasty ogres, and 90s pop culture, acclaimed young playwright Qui Nguyen offers a heart-pounding homage to the geek and warrior within us all.

Ben Grubb (Director) has acted with Actors Ensemble for the past decade in plays such as True West, Passion Play, and Panhandle. Previous directing credits include Speed-the-Plow, The Wager, and Billy Bishop Goes to War.

The Earth from Space

Short Plays by Parks and Lashoff,?by? Suzan Lori-Parks and Carol Lashoff,?directed by Susannah Wood.
One night only, Monday, January 14th, 2018, 8 p.m. Live Oak Theatre

Selections from 365/365?by Suzan Lori-Parks
Persephone Underground?by Carol Lashoff

The program starts off with excerpts from World-renowned playwright Suzan-Lori Parks' 365/365, a satirically hopeful work about world troubles and how to face them boldly, with humor.

The program continues with Carol Lashoff's one-act play Persephone Underground. What would you do if your daughter ran away with the boyfriend from hell? Literally. If you are Demeter, the goddess of the harvest, you have the power to hold the whole earth hostage. "Lashof's play is a tender rewrite of the ancient Greek myth, with timely reminders of the beauty of the Earth and the need to preserve it. Carol Lashof is a Berkeley writer whose work recently premiered off Broadway and who is recognized for prompting discussion about current issues in her plays.

Susannah Wood (Director) has been active as a professional actress and singer for many years, in the Bay Area and beyond. She has directed over 50 classic and new plays for Actors Ensemble, Crowden Summer Opera and Opera Piccola ("Small Works").
