Hi friends,
Gamelan Sekar Jaya¡¯s Angklung and Dance Ensembles will be featured this coming Friday Oct 26, in the 7th Annual Cross Cultural Concert at Berkeley¡¯s La Pe?a.
GSJ will be presenting traditional Balinese dance and music pieces, led by I Nyoman Windha, our Guest Music Director this season, as well as dancers-in-residence I Made Moja, and Shoko Yamamuro.
The music of the gamelan-inspired group Purnamasari will also be showcased, along with Balinese paintings from artist I Made Moja and art work from young Bay Area women of the ArtBomb Collective.

Dear Community and Campus Partners,
We are?pleased to announce the?launch?of the next grant cycle for Chancellor¡¯s Community Partnership Fund projects that will begin in the fall semester of 2019.?
In the 2019-20 grant cycle the CCPF will make approximately $290,000 in grants to innovative campus-community partnerships designed to improve the quality of life for Berkeley residents. Berkeley-based collaborative projects that focus on the arts and culture, community safety, economic development, environmental stewardship and education are encouraged to apply. Proposed projects must include at least?one university?and?one Berkeley community?partner.
All grants will be for one-year projects or programs. Education-related grants applicants are required to demonstrate that their project is aligned with and furthers the objectives of?the?.
The 2020 Vision is Berkeley¡¯s community-wide effort to end the racial disparities in academic achievement among children and youth in Berkeley. The 2020 Vision partners include: Berkeley Unified School District, the City of Berkeley, Berkeley City College, UC Berkeley and several community based organizations. More information about the 2020 Vision for Berkeley¡¯s Children and Youth will be provided at the mixer.
Applicants must complete a Pre-Application form (see attached) which is due?December 10, 2018 before 5 pm. Eligible projects must have at least one community partner and one university partner. Michael Dear, host and moderator, co-curator of Califas, Cal emeritus professor and author of Why Walls Won¡¯t Work: Repairing the US-Mexico Divide, hosts a round-table discussion with:
Richard C¨¢ndida Smith / emeritus professor of history at UC Berkeley, and author of Utopia and Dissent: Art, Poetry and Politics in California; and Improvised Continent: Pan-Americanism and Cultural Exchange. Contributor to Califas catalogue.
Norma ?Iglesias Prieto / member of Mexico¡¯s Sistema Internacional de Investigadores, formerly at El Colegio de la Frontera Norte in Tijuana, and currently professor of Chicana and Chicano Studies at San Diego State University. Author of Emergencias: Las artes visuales en Tijuana, and contributor to Califas catalogue.
Ronald Rael?/ co-curator of?Califas, artist, professor of architecture and art practice at UC Berkeley, and author of?Borderwall as Architecture: A Manifesto for the U.S. Mexico Boundary.
About the exhibition: Califas: Art of the US-Mexico Borderlands / El Arte de la Zona Fronteriza M¨¦xico-Estados Unidos explores representations of the US-Mexico ¡®borderlands¡¯ in contemporary art, with a special emphasis on the Bay Area. This exhibition comes at a moment when the current nationwide immigration crisis has once again focused attention on the border between Mexico and the United States.
The exhibition features works by 22 contemporary artists and collaborative groups who explore the origins of migrant memory, the consequences of boundary line fortification, the mixing of border cultures, responses to injustice and inequality, and ideas and solutions to advance the borderlands and its peoples.
Califas: Art of the US-Mexico Borderlands / El Arte de la Zona Fronteriza M¨¦xico-Estados Unidos opens to the public on Tuesday, September 11 and runs through November 16, 2018. The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue featuring essays by Richard C¨¢ndida-Smith, Norma Iglesias-Prieto, Lowery Stokes Sims, and Michael Dear and Ronald Rael.?

Berkeley Historical Society Final Days of "Collection Gems"
Do you know this Berkeleyan in Greek costume? To find out more, catch the Berkeley Historical Society's Collection Gems: 40 Years of Documenting Berkeley?History?exhibit before it closes!
Museum Hours: Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 1¨C4 pm, until October 27. Extended hours on October 27 from 4 to 6 to fete the closing with wine and cheese and a video of BHS ¡°photo gems¡± in the lobby.

The City of Berkeley is seeking artists to create works of functional public art for the North Berkeley Senior Center and San Pablo Park. Both sites are being renovated over the next couple years and the public art components will be integrated
into the planned improvement projects in order to beautify these spaces and contribute to their unique character.

PROJECT DESCRIPTIONS
North Berkeley Senior Center: Artwork is being commissioned for the entry plaza and will be integrated with the seating and planted areas. This entry plaza will be a space where building users can gather to socialize, play games
and enjoy time spent outdoors. The artwork will complement the plaza design and may include sculptural seating or other interactive and functional sculptural elements. It may also include decorative and integrated treatments to the space such as tile or other
durable media for the vertical retaining walls.
Budget: One artist or artist team will be selected for this project site and the artwork budget is up to $100,000 which is inclusive of all costs including artist fees, artwork materials, fabrication and installation.

San Pablo Park: Artwork is being commissioned in conjunction with the park renovations. The artworks may include functional, sculptural or integrated durable two dimensional treatments and may address any part of the park site. Artists
may consider opportunities for artwork to integrate into the soon-to-be-constructed park improvements, such as the new tennis court fencing or any new retaining walls. The artwork may also be free standing or surface mounted and may include landmark or wayfinding
sculptural elements or sculptural seating or interactive kinetic sculpture. All artwork must be both durable and meet all codes and safety standards.
Budget: Up to two artists or artist teams will be selected for this project site and the combined artwork budget for all artwork for this site is $200,000 and is inclusive of all costs including artist fees, artwork materials, fabrication
and installation. If more than one artist or artist team is selected, the total budget allocation will be split between the two selected artists/artist teams.
