A Northern California?Native American (probably Pomo) Child Amidst a Field of California Poppies

The California poppy deeply planted itself into all the human cultures who lived in California. Richard will share their amazing stories and the poppy's own journey.
The bees and the poppy evolved hand-in-hand and the art and culture of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries often focused on that relationship, as the people who lived so close to the land were keen observers.
Richard will share many of these pieces and stories which reveal how the California poppy has mesmerized the people of California throughout time like no other flower ever has.
?
Pioneer Botanist and Oakland Resident Sarah Lemmon's determined many-year effort to get the California poppy named the official California State Flower finally paid off in 1903. Richard will tell her story.?

Aurora School
Aurora School¡¯s mission is to nurture students' love of learning by cultivating academic excellence, emotional intelligence, and social engagement.
We are an independent, progressive K-8 school in Oakland. Our teachers foster academic excellence and problem-solving skills with a focus on social justice and project-based learning.?
Social-emotional learning is essential to our curriculum, with an emphasis on self-awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. Our community of students, parents and staff practice empathy, kindness, and inclusivity, and move through the world with positive intention.
Learning at Aurora happens in multi-grade classrooms, where students in grades K/1, 2/3, 4/5 and middle school share learning spaces. Older students have the opportunity to mentor younger students, who become mentors themselves the next year, forming friendships beyond their age groups, and supporting learning at all levels.
Our Middle School curriculum features project-based learning in STEM and humanities. Students start with questions like ¡°how do we prevent and respond to discrimination?¡± or ¡°how can the study of nature inform robotics?¡± Drawing from classroom lessons, guest speakers, and weekly excursions they create culminating presentations demonstrating the applications of what they¡¯ve learned.
Aurora has been a progressive education trailblazer since our founding in 1988. We have one of the lowest teacher/student ratios, and largest school libraries, of any East Bay independent school. An Aurora education is grounded in STEM and humanities, along with art, music, Spanish, library, and physical education. We offer flexible tuition to ensure economic diversity.
The best way to see what makes us special is to come visit our historic campus, located just off Highways 13 and 24 in Oakland. We have scheduled tours on Fridays for Lower School (K-5) and Thursdays for our Middle School (6-8). We can also schedule a tour at your convenience.?
If you¡¯d like to learn more about Aurora School, visit , email admissions@... or call 510-428-2606, extension 204.

Applications Now Open! Bay Area Grassroots Artists Advocacy Program
? Join CA for the Arts, your advocacy network organization. Announcing GAAP Guidelines |
|
|
CA for the Arts announces the Guidelines for our Grassroots Artists Advocacy Program (GAAP). GAAP is a cohort-based fellowship program for artist advocates, 18 years or older, who live or work in Oakland or San Francisco. Artist Advocates include diverse artists, culture bearers, and creative workers with a dedicated and committed artistic or cultural practice who directly engage in advocacy and policy development to advance the holistic well-being of the field. Each artist advocate will identify a change they want to make happen and be supported to develop an advocacy plan to enact that change. GAAP awards a cohort of five artist advocates $12,000 each to participate in a nine-month curriculum that will launch in November 2024. The stipend is not a grant. The cohort members will dedicate 25 hours per month to attend in-person and Zoom meetings of the learning community and work on their advocacy plans.
? ?? . ?
The GAAP application will open on October 1 and close on October 14, 2024, at 5:00 pm PDT. Please join us for an Informational Webinar on Friday, 10/4, at 12:00 pm PDT with Program Consultant Lead Ted Russell and CA for the Arts Director of Programs NeFesha Yisra¡¯el. They will review the program and application process and answer questions. For any questions in the meantime please contact GAAP Program Lead Ted Russell Ted@....?

The Samapguitas & Friends return to the Freight & Salvage on October 26!
Celebrate Filipino-American History Month The Samapguitas?& Friends return to the Freight & Salvage on October?26!
More info:
The Sampaguitas & Friends: Journeys of A Third Culture is a celebration of Filipino-American history and the third culture experience of the present and future via music, dance and stories. With special guests Vangie Buell, Theresa Calpotura, Melissa Cruz, Genesis Fermin, Kaisahan AfroCubalintang, and more.
Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, The Sampaguitas sing Filipino folk songs and inspired originals in three-part harmony. Drawing influences from folk, blues, doo-wop girl groups, and the Filipinx-American diaspora, Jenevieve Francisco, Cristina Ibarra, and Aireene Espiritu share music from their roots and explore what it means to be in a ¡°third culture¡± between worlds. The sampaguita is the national flower of the Philippines and only fitting to describe the sweet sounds coming from their melded vocal textures, tones, and tight harmonies.
